When you go to pick up a mystery book, what kind do you choose? My obsession is the crime novel. I am a connoisseur of crime novels. Whether it is Vicki Delany and her female sleuths, Larry Karp and his period pieces, or Jon Talton and his David Mapstone mysteries I just eat them up. Now it’s getting to be that time of year where we can start to bundle up, cover up, and snuggle up with a great book. I will start at the first page and wonder if I am reading the thoughts of the killer with every turn of the page. I read with breathless anticipation as the main character searches for the clue that will, finally, tell them who the killer is. I can live vicariously through both the criminal and the justice seeker. They live the lives I can only read about. That is the true beauty of books, is that they can take you to so many different worlds. These authors are so good that I am right there with the victims as they breathe their last breath. I know the motivation and the skill of the killer. I am there when the hero finally brings the killer to justice. Every turn that the mystery takes catches me by surprise. Every hurdle the hero jumps, I am there leaping with them. When I am done, I finally look up and I am surprised at how much time has passed by. I have lived an entire adventure sitting in my comfy chair. So if you want to be engrossed to the point of losing yourself into the story, then there are no better books to do it with than crime novels. They will transport you into a world of crime that you can't get out of, and frankly, one you won't want to leave.
