When I was in middle school, every grade had to go to either the cafeteria or the gym and read for half an hour. Once you reached 8th grade, you were sometimes allowed to bring your homework during this time and do that instead of reading a book. However, if we got too loud, we were no longer allowed to do our homework. The assistant principles would come around and make sure we weren't reading a textbook or completing assignments. Our punishment was not being able to do our homework during school. Tell me again how our public school system is all about educating us and not just trying to make us fall in line.
