It’s very interesting to see Youko Kurama’s relationship when he had Kuronue as a partner vs Yomi.

What stood out to me was this scene in the YYH Poltergeist Report Movie:

Here we see, Kurama pause and gloat with Kuronue as they stole a valuable treasure. The Youko Kurama Yomi told us about is very cold and calculating, who never underestimated the enemy. But here, Kurama did the opposite. It was arguably both of Kurama and Kuronue’s arrogance that they would successfully run away without getting caught that would ironically lead Kuronue to getting caught and killed.

I personally think Kuronue’s death impacted Kurama so much that he became the cold calculating person Yomi had told us about. He emotionally distanced himself away from others so he would not have to feel a loss similar to the one had with Kuronue.

In fact, I think Kuruma felt so guilty about having to escape and leaving Kuronue to die (even with Kuronue’s consent to do so) is what made Kuruma save Yomi many times despite Yomi constantly going against his orders. It’s all because Kurama did not want to feel the pain of having another fallen comrade (or feel guilt). It was until Yomi pulled the last straw and tried Kurama’s patience that lead to Kurama  betraying Yomi and hiring that assassin to kill him.
