"The Poster Remediated"

Anniversary exhibition of the 25th International Poster Biennale.

Opening in Warsaw’s Poster Museum in June 2016, The Poster Remediated explores how the conventional poster is undergoing rapid transformation in an age of ubiquitous digital screens and social media. ‘I am a Man’ and ‘Je Suis Charlie’ shows how posters can promote justice and human rights. But posters are often accused of manipulating the viewer and of dominating our streets too. Activists like Vermibus, Jordan Seiler or Brandalism often remove commercial advertisements from their illuminated frames, replacing these posters with abstract art or anti-consumerist messages. Professor David Crowley, Head of Critical Writing in Art & Design, has a long-term research interest in the poster as both a design object and a means of communication. OPEN WALLS Gallery's Blog talked to David about his curation of the fiftieth Warsaw International Poster Biennale in June 2016, and the changing faces of poster design and dissemination in the digital twenty-first century. Found this beauty today in our archives. Notice the date Conservation Week August 3-11 1974.

The piece is by the well-known Austrian artist and activist -Friedensreich Hundertwasser - who created the most intriguing detailed paintings that often had an environmental message.

Today the exhibition The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec: Prints and Posters opens at MoMA. This is a very special event as it is the first time in 30 years that MoMA has devoted an exhibition solely to Lautrec. It features their extensive collection of more than 100 exquisite printed ephemera, posters, lithographs and printed books made at the height of his career. 

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (`864 - 1901) is well known for his depictions of Parisian life and for bringing the avant-garde of the late 19th century to the broader public through his famous posters and illustrations. Today he is seen as one of the most important figures in poster art and art history. 

The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec focuses on specific facets of his work and life in France, such as entertainment and nightlife and the famous singers and actresses who made venues, like The Moulin Rouge, so spectacular. Another will focus on his Elles series which sensitively portrays brothel life in Paris at the time. These images capture prostitutes outside working hours, in private moments of quiet contemplation. These women, whom he portrayed with such affection, came to be his great muses.

In France, 1990, a limited edition reissue was made of Lautrec's Elles series. The set of 11 lithographs are printed in the highest quality and are available at Philip Williams Posters, individually and as a full set. 

The Seated Clowness, $600. This sheet features the contortionist dancer Miss Cha-U-Kao (a phonetic play on chahut-chaos or chaotic can-can) in a strong and provocative pose.
