With the new season of Supergirl premiering tonight (It is tonight, right?) I’ve been thinking about bringing to tumblr a criticism I posted on a forum last year after seeing the first episode of the series (I’ll summarize it for you quickly: I did not like it).
However, I didn’t keep up with the show for long (I think I made it to episode three?  I really did not like the show) and almost everything I’ve heard across the board has been that it got so much better as the season progressed.  Those who started the series not liking it thought it grew to ‘good’, and those who thought it started ‘good’ say it became ‘great’.  The first episode, no matter how bad it might have been (Seriously, my critique was practically an essay.  There’s ten paragraphs of pedanticism and whining in this rant), no longer represents the series as a whole.  I’d be dragging up something already dead and gone just to shake my finger at it for no benefit to anyone, and I don’t want to hate the show for hate’s sake.
Despite the fact that I hated the first episode, I’m still glad that the show is continuing on.  I’m glad that there’s an upbeat, happy superhero show on TV, which features an amazing superheroine that has managed to resonate and connect with audiences.  I prayed for a second season renewal and was happy to hear that it had gotten picked up again (Although more than a little worried when I heard it was moving to The CW for alllllllllll the reasons).  I might not be a fan, but I’m definitely a supporter, because it’s a show that deserves to be on the air.
But...that first episode still really sucked.  Just a trainwreck from start to end, a mess on almost every level, from the writing to the acting to the production.
Anybody care to see my spleen after all, or should it be left to lie where it is?
