The doorbell rings through the dark apartment. On the couch a guy in a grey henley and dark cargo pants puts his beer down and goes to the door. Flipping the light switch he opens the door to the cold winter air and two people. A woman and a man in winter coats stand in front of him, the man’s arm is slung around the woman’s back. He takes a step back but holds the door open.
“Uh...Hi, Mouse. Hi, Spot,” he waves a hand at them looking from the guy to the female.
“Hi Jay!”, stepping forward Spot reaches out to hug him.
Jay takes another step backwards.
She lets her arms sink down, “Oh, sorry. I know it was a long shift for you both.” Her eyes search Mouse’s, “When Greg said you were watching the game together, I thought I’d join you.” She shakes her head and turns around holding out her hand, “Greg, the keys please. I’ll head home. Have a good time you two.”
Greg hands her the keys and she leaves.
“Fuck! Mouse, I didn’t mean to make her leave.”
“I know. But it was pretty clear you didn’t want her to stay. I told her you might not be thrilled if she came along.”
The other man rakes a hand through his hair, “Yeah, I like your girlfriend well enough—but not today. Come in Mouse.” And steps aside. Mouse hugs him briefly, before moving into the apartment.
While Greg walks in—shedding his shoes and winter coat—Jay closes the door and heads for the kitchen. There he opens the fridge and pauses. His eyes close and he takes a deep breath, before grabbing two beers and opening them. He takes the beers back to the living room, handing one to Mouse. His friend is laying on the short side of the couch, legs stretched out, feet up on the armrest. Jay checks the heater, “You want a blanket?”
“Wouldn’t mind one.”
Lifting a section of the seating, Jay pulls out two blankets and hands him one. Before, grabbing the remote from the table and siting down next to the other man. When, he puts his feet on the coffee table Mouse offers, “You can just lay down, you know.”
“You’ve got a girlfriend now.”
“And you’re still my buddy. You putting your head in my lap doesn’t make you competition for my girl.”
“Pff,” with that he shifts, so his head lands in Mouse’s lap and his legs on the long side of the couch. He turns on the TV and switches to the hockey game.
The first period of the game passes quietly, with Mouse gently caressing Jay’s hair. During the first intermission Jay locks up, “You want some pizza for the next?”
“Sure.”
And Jay picks up his phone and orders.
The second period is spent with a new round of beers and a couple of peanuts and chips. Every so often one of them comments on the game events. When Mouse stops at half his pizza during the intermission, Jay frowns, “Lost your appetite?”
“No, just already ate at home. Food and sleep are the two things Spot doesn’t let me skip.”
“And you knew I wouldn’t order, if it was just me,” he shakes his head. After he finishes his pizza, he takes Mouses pizza carton and stores it in the fridge. Then he returns to his earlier spot, mumbling, “This case was crazy. Harmless over all, but crazy busy.”
“Yeah, and that’s without bringing down a scaffold at the Dispatch Center.”
Jay sits up, “Why would you do that?”
“Because it disagreed with the use Spot and I made of it,” Mouse smirks.
“Seriously? Did you get caught?”
“Of course not! I’m not Adam with his parking lot stunt.”
“Could’ve fooled me.”
They settle back down for the third period of the game.
During overtime Mouse’s phone vibrates. He checks the text message and types a reply. Locking up at Jay, he says, “Spot got called into work to cover a half shift for a sick colleague.”
“Hm,” Jay replies sleepy.
Shortly after the game and the after-game report are over.
“You wanna head home now, Mouse?” Jay asks without moving.
“Spot isn’t gonna be home till morning. Mind if I stay?” Mouse looks up at him.
His friend smiles, “Course not.”
Both get up. Jay heads into the bathroom, while Mouse clears the table. When Mouse walks down the hall his friend comes out of the bedroom and hands him a set of spare clothes. By the time he is ready for bed, Jay has dimmed the lights in the bedroom and set out an additional pillow and blanket. Slipping under the blanket, Mouse says, “Night Jay.”
“Good night, Mouse. Uh, you sure Spot won’t mind?”
Mouse chuckles, “No, definitely not.” And turns off the lights.
