Tumblr Revival
Tl;dr
Tumblr has a large interconnected community of artists and content creators, and should focus on its strengths and what it does right. Instead of trying to compete for space against Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Tumblr should focus on empowering its community and giving that community the tools to develop the site's unparalleled uniqueness.
Tumblr is the crossroads of the internet, with a monthly user traffic of 300 million it is the perfect space for artists, content creators, and small businesses to grow their following without having to fight for a seat at the table against companies with huge budgets.
This tumblr is participating in the post plus protest

Okay. So. Heads up for fan creators who might have had the same horrifying realization I did regarding liability if a post plus user reblogs fanwork.
Theoretically, the way post plus works is you are paying for the ORIGINAL blog’s posts. That blogger chooses whether or not that particular post is for subscribers. Reblogs of the monetized post can be seen by all. So in theory, only original posts can be put behind a paywall, and reblogs of both their work, and other people’s work are not monetized. So theoretically, liability wise, we should be safe. But, I am not a lawyer. There is no definite here. There is also a possibility post plus will be broken upon launch and allow monetization of other people’s work. There is a possibility that companies like Disney will not care.
Unfortunately, there’s only two solutions I can think of off the top of my head. Again, not from any law experience but from being in fandom for over a decade. 1. Block post plus users. I doubt there will be many, but a block on sight might be the safest option, especially for bigger fan blogs.
2. Time to dust off disclaimers. Thanks to Ao3, some of us have forgotten the classic ward against lawyers, or are too young to remember. But postplus has a legitimate risk that means time to bring them back. OTW might have better worded ideas, but here’s a few off the top of my head.
2a. (For your blog bio) “Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to any transformative work found on my blog. All rights go to their respective rights holders.” 2b. (For your blog bio if you have a ko-fi/patreon) “Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to any transformative work found on my blog. All rights go to their respective rights holders. All transformative work is free to view, and I am not soliciting money via my transformative work. My Ko-fi/Patreon is an optional addition for those who enjoy my original posts and is not related to my transformative work.” (Important note: This has not been run by any lawyers, but, while it is a suggestion there are several important caveats. Your Ko-fi/Patreon must have nothing relating to fancontent. In addition, you must have original posts/original work.) 2c. (For any fanfic/fanart posts) “Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to (insert ip name). All rights go to (insert ip owner). This is a transformative work.”
Hi all! :) In light of recent events (PostPlus), I'd like everyone to know that this blog will NEVER be pay to read. Hopefully Tumblr realizes how fucking idiotic of a move this is and cancels the addition, but to make this happen, I'd like to forward a message:
On August 6th, there will be a log-out protest against PostPlus. No posting, no reblogging, no likes, nothing.
Log out on August 6th at 12 AM EST (Aug 5th @ 9 PM PST) for the whole day. I will be participating and I very much recommend you all do so as well. A lot of fanworks are on Tumblr, and a lot of fanfic authors link their Ko-Fi or Patreons on Tumblr, since it's against AO3 terms of service to have your donation link in your profile. Without Tumblr, a lot of these artists will have difficulty finding another site so they can get an income. (Writing/creating fanworks for money can get you sued! We're looking at you, Anne Rice.)
So please, join me and millions of other users and log out in protest of Post Plus.
Just note that I will be taking part in the second Tumblr Protest of Tumblr Plus, happening from the beginning of October the 1st to the end of October the 2nd.
I will not be online on Tumblr for those two days, being back sometime on the 3rd. You may continue to send requests and stuff, but I wont answer them until the 3rd.
