Dionaea - Still
Mathcore with a splash of post rock
Track: Same Story Artist: Dionaea Album: Still Year: 2011 Genre: Metal, Grind, Post Grind, Experimental
----
Dionaea, a band from Pennsylvania/New Jersey (Pennjersey, as they call it on their Bandcamp), is a group of some of the most talented musicians and songwriters I've ever listened to. They've only released two records: An EP and an LP. This is their debut LP, and it is fantastic.
Their songwriting is superb, straying from typical song structure, but still revisiting sections of the song from previous points. Their drummer really knows what he's doing, flourishing in the soft parts, and intensifying the technical parts, while experimenting with interesting polyrhythms. The bass-work on this LP is fantastic, having featured sections that sound great and overall playing at a high standard. The guitarists are phenomenal, playing a wide array of riffs that require tremendous amounts of talent to play and write. Overall my biggest gripe about the album is the vocals, which don't even make an appearance very often. Seldom in this track, and only again, seldom, in the final, third track. Sometimes they're fitting, but at times they can get kind of in-the-way and unenjoyable. But anyways, you should definitely give this album a shot; it's fantastic.
