None of my cats got on my lap, and I haven't been scratching my knee either. It out of nowhere started to sting and teeter between stinging and burning ing. I went to the bathroom to check and at first it looked smile two, maybe three, spider bites. But it still stings/burns despite having ointment put on it and I had Jaocb shine is phone light on it and to both oa of they kind of look like three or four scratches now.

The Brown Mountain Lights are “ghost lights” that appear above Brown Mountain in North Carolina.  The phenomena was first documented in 1913 and was described by the observer as distinctly circular red lights appearing each night above Brown Mountain.  The lights can still be seen today – Wiseman’s View, a prime viewing spot, has even received state-funded renovations to encourage tourist traffic.

No definite explanation has ever been provided for the lights.  Skeptics believe the lights are lights from trains, automobiles, or ATVs being reflected by mist.  Others believe they are the result of swamp gas or simply misinterpretations of celestial bodies.  However, these theories are contested due to the nature of the lights – they do not follow varying paths like reflected headlights would, nor do they issue from a particular spot and drift upwards, like swamp gas.

A more widely accepted theory is that the lights are the result of frictional energy built up within the mountain.  Brown Mountain is composed largely of quartz, granite, and iron.  It also sits atop the Brevard Fault, a long-inactive fault that shaped much of the Blue Ridge portion of the Appalachian Mountains.  When pressure (a possible result of slight gradual movement of the fault) is applied to quartz, energy in a visible and luminous form can be generated.  This would explain the ball-lighting-like nature of the lights.  However, if this were the case, the application of force would be able to trigger the lights. Experiments using various energy sources, including dynamite, have failed to generate any lights on the mountain.
