Phil Knight, founder of Nike, is currently worth $27 Billion. You may think "yeah, of course he's rich - he founded Nike!" but that's an easy way of thinking about his success. The more interesting story is "how did Nike become Nike?" In his memoir Shoe Dog, he tells of the time, 12 years after graduating from Stanford with an MBA, when his credit card was declined at a gas station because he had no money in the bank! 12 years after Stanford MBA...still no money. Why? Because at the time, he was, despite the setbacks and lack of positive cash flow, obsessively chasing his dream of selling shoes. His father, a successful businessman at the time, used to ask him - "When are you going to stop jack-assing around trying to sell shoes?" Which now seems crazy! He wasn't "trying to sell shoes" - he was starting Nike! But hindsight is 20/20. Moral? Phil Knight puts it this way - "If you're going to build something incredible, you have to be willing to let people see you as crazy."
