Query: How is it that despite having no concept of time, each of Zagreus's escapes just so happens to coincide with the dawn?
Answer: Nyx wants to watch the boss battle regardless of what time it is and will cover the world in darkness to do it, but also wants to be home before Hades gets there
Answer: Zagreus actually stays on the cliff until sunrise hits every time, which explains why sometimes he dies much faster on the surface than others

Does anyone else have that one character that they've latched onto and constantly writes whump for them? Yeah, for me, that's Artemis Crock.
Her immune system was basically destroyed from years and years of constant stress and no proper medical treatment. She got sick really often but hid it from everyone because she didn't want to seem weak and she didn't want to take a break from hero work. This caused a lot of issues such as trying not to puke during the hour long rides in Bioship, passing out from being dehydrated, being delirious from high fevers, and many more. She also doesn't treat herself very well and doesn't rest enough, doesn't take medicine enough, doesn't eat or drink enough, and makes everything worse for herself in every possible way. Her and her mother often can't afford treatment either. The league would absolutely help but Artemis doesn't want to seem weak or like a charity case. Since she doesn't take care of herself properly, she gets a lot sicker than she would have if she had taken care of herself. She ends up in the hospital with pneumonia and all she can think about is how her and her mom are going to pay for it. Batman ends up finding out pretty quickly and pays the bill, sending the money as an anonymous donor. Him and Kaldur sit her down and basically say, "Look, you have to start taking care of yourself. If you feel bad in the slightest, sit out missions. There's nothing wrong with asking for help. Nobody is going to see you any differently if you're out sick. If you need help with treatment, you can ask for help"
I did a thing!

Every year, Artemis’s birthday comes to pass in Fowl Manor- and every year, he’s disappointed.
————————————————————
It was well past midnight when the voices finally faded.
Artemis waited until he could hear no sounds from the Manor’s lower level before he finally rose, closing his book. He sighed. Outside, only a pale smudge in the clouds showed where the moon could be, and when he stepped out into the hallway, the ink-like shadows felt heavy. Tomorrow would bring rain, and likely thunder too. How pleasant.
As his eyes adjusted, Artemis began a slow creep down the narrow hallway, every sense stretched for the slightest disturbance in the late-night stillness. While the party now appeared to be over, he was never entirely sure, and there was always the odd chance that his parents were still awake. And yet, as he reached the bottom of the stairwell without sight or sound of another, and surveyed the empty foyer, all he could manage was an exhausted frown.
Oh, how he hated his birthday.
Though the foyer was abandoned, he still kept silent as he crept past the tables and chairs, ever alert. In the dark, everything looked out-of-place- with the lights off, the white and gold sat, dulled and grey. He was sure there was a message to be found there. All that glitters…
Bitterness welled in his chest.
The kitchen was equally abandoned, though messy, with dishes scattered out of their places. All left for the Butlers, with no concern- with another sigh, Artemis flicked on the light over the sink, and quietly began stacking them, careful not to let them clatter. It had been ‘his’ celebration that had left this mess behind- in his mind, it was hardly fair to just leave it for them, especially when the two hadn’t really been able to participate. Juliet had been busy with her schoolwork, and Butler with security. He reminded himself to check on them later.
As he slowly rinsed glass after glass, Artemis felt the bitterness in his chest coil, angry and thunderous. It was supposed to be his birthday. His. And yet, he knew as sure as the coming dawn that none of the party had been for him. It had been for the delight of his parents, eager to show off, as always.
He had asked for something different. A small, quiet party, just them and the Butlers, maybe a few acquaintances from school if Mother had to have more present. And yet, when Artemis had woken up that morning, he had come down to find the lower levels being prepared for a massive gathering, the guest books full of names he didn’t recognize. He had been told to ‘look sharp’ and ‘enjoy himself’, as if a room full of strangers and bright, dazzling lights were exactly what he had wanted.
He had abandoned the festivities as soon as he could. Alcohol had started to be passed around, and voices had grown louder among the crowd- while getting tipsy and gossiping among upper-class peers was fun for his mother, it certainly was not for her son. She had asked him to play the piano- loudly, in front of everyone. With every eye on him, he had grit his teeth and done so, even as every fiber of his being had recoiled under the attention. How could he refuse her, with everyone watching?
He had left almost immediately after, taking refuge in his room, staring at his novel until the words had blurred. Neither parent had made it up to his room to wish him goodnight. Then again, they never did.
“At least it made her happy.”, he whispered, as he set the last glass aside. With that done, he put on a kettle and found a mug. It didn’t look like he would be sleeping anytime soon- some tea would help wash the bitter taste from his mouth.
As he rummaged around in the gloom, his elbow clattered against glass- with reflexes born of the need for quiet, he caught the bottle before it could fall. Wine.
It must have been left out by Mother and Father, he mused. It wasn’t entirely empty, surprisingly- they must have stumbled out of the kitchen rather early, exhausted from playing the role of gracious hosts. Artemis turned the bottle in his hand, the label half-decipherable in the dim light. Not one of the expensive ones, then.
Frustration prickled in his stomach. He was so tired of this.
With a slight shake of his head, the genius made his way into the dark hall, past the kitchen. The wine cabinet sat to his right- frustrated, Artemis checked the label and tried to set it back in it’s slot.
It was out of his reach.
Artemis froze, blinking. He turned back to look at the almost-empty bottle, and then the almost-empty cabinet, it’s slots too tall for a child like him. The frustration in his stomach uncoiled, his free hand curling into a fist.
His eyes stung.
He turned sharply on his heel, abandoning the hallway altogether. Fighting to control his now-shaking hands, Artemis wrenched the top from the bottle and poured what was left down the sink, watching the alcohol drain away with unblinking eyes. His face was emotionless. When it was gone, he dumped the bottle in the bin- it wasn’t like either parent would really care, or even remember where it had gone.
Stone-faced, he took the boiling water from the stove, carefully pouring it into the mug. He left the empty kettle on the counter as he fled the kitchen, dumping the tea bag into the mug with none of his usual care. He didn’t need good tea- he just needed something other than the sour taste in his mouth.
By the time he made it back to his room, his vision had blurred, and he set the tea on his desk with shaking hands. The anger inside of him had ebbed- in its place was something emptier, hollow and aching and exhausting. Something that made the dim gloom of his bedroom seem lonelier, and the air colder.
The armchair creaked as he slowly curled into it, drawing his knees up against his chest. He fumbled behind him until he found the quilt, neatly folded across the chair’s back- with a small tug he pulled it around himself, childishly desperate for something comforting, for something warm in the almost-empty house the Fowls shared.
His phone buzzed.
Tilting his head, Artemis stared at the small patch of dim light, as the notification sounded once more. Slowly, he reached across his desk, slim fingers curling around the device. The screen automatically darkened as he brought it to his face- through the haze of his bleary vision, he could barely make out the text.
Went 2 bed early- too loud downstairs to come down:(( Happy Birthday, Arty!
- Jules + Butler (he says happy birthday)
Artemis blinked slowly. He let out a huff of breath, more sob than laugh, as he hugged the small device to his chest. His eyes stung, and finally ran over as the stress of the day caught up to him. Tears crept down his narrow face, and he clutched a hand to his mouth, fighting to keep himself quiet.
He was so, so grateful for the Butlers. Always the first to offer aid or comfort, or even a simple friend. It always felt like the two loved him more than his own parents- and he was beginning to suspect that was actually the case.
He loved his parents. He did. He did everything they wanted, was polite and well-mannered and obedient- and still, they had not wished him a congratulations, or even a simple goodnight. Instead they had spent the evening drinking with friends, in an environment they knew would quickly drive him away- it was like they had barely thought about him at all.
“Happy Birthday… to me.”, he muttered, into the dark, shifting to wipe the tears from his eyes.
