From brown to.... not so brown, here's a before and after photo of the poolside mural I had the pleasure of painting recently at a home on the waters of Gymea Bay. Hit me up if you'd like a before and after shot like this at you home, business school etc etc. I can send you a quote pretty easy 🎨👌. #mulgatheartist #muralart #poolmural #poolart #turtleart #australianart #sydneystreetart (at Gymea Bay, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHm0wQHAXlA/?igshid=hvnaaq8k5edw

The art, the castle and the Kenroku-en of Kanazawa
15th September 2018
Kanazawa is a 3 hour train ride from Nagoya. A bit of a trek so we decided to save it for one of the long weekends we seem to get relatively regularly in Japan. Our hotel, literally a stones throw from the station was basic but handy for the bus stop.
The first location we visited in Kanazawa was the Museum of Contemporary Art. The most well known exhibit is the illusion swimming pool. This can be viewed from below and above.
There were a range of other permanent and temporary exhibits which were also thought provoking. Conceptual work by visiting Chinese artists and the Deathlab made the queuing worthwhile.
Another key Kanazawa tourist spot is the Ninja Temple, Myoryu-ji. Not actually a temple for ninjas but it is a very cleverly designed temple with many hidden defences. We were given the brilliant tour of trap doors, fake walls and hidden levels. It was a completely fascinating view of the many ingenius ways developed for protection.
During our explorations of the city we came across a local craft market and festival parade. The parade involved drumming, music and ritual re-enacting of brave warriors killing a monster.
Artistic crafts became an important part of Kanazawan life in the Edo period when it was considered cultural competition for Kyoto. Traditional streets were filled with shops selling traditional ceramics and thread balls. Gold leaf is used in lacquer work and across a range of crafts. They even put it on to ice-cream.
One of the most famous places in Kanazawa are the Kenrokuen gardens and the remains of the castle.
The gardens are a definite highlight of the visit having something different to offer at different times of the year. The castle consists of some outer walls and gates. The main keep burnt down in the Edo period and was not rebuilt as symbol of deference to the Shogun. The remaining buildings have been restored to their previous splendour over recent years. We got to fully enjoy the surroundings by having a traditional tea set whilst overlooking parts of the castle.
Kanazawa was a city full of tradition and gems of interest. There is more we want to see here especially in a different season.
