Rica is a small tropical island with a variety of environments and high biodiversity. Much of Rica is covered in dense rainforest, but there are also mountain ranges, and highly populated sandy beaches. Professor Piper has been looking for skilled trainers to help her study the secrets of the rainforest.
Introducing the Pokengine Borovian Manor Halloween Event! Trainers are invited from around the globe to a mysterious Count's illusive manor in the far away region of Borovia! Can you traverse the manor's twisted hallways and solve the mystery of the Lost Souls... Make an account on Pokengine and join our discord to play the mmo! Have Fun, and don't lose your head!
A little late for a Halloween event, but we opened it up on the 30th to let Pokengine players run through and solve any game breaking bugs before new waves of players arrive after promoting on social media. If you find any errors or glitches please report them to our discord's #glitches channel so we can solve the issue as fast as we can!
This was a massive effort from a lot of us and includes designs from Qamor, @z-nogyrop-draws, @oripoke, and much much more amazing fakemon artists so we hope you enjoy!
How does Pokengine work?
How indeed...
...Kidding! Pokengine.org is a long (looooong)-running, fan-made Pokémon MMORPG... of a sort. See, it’s really more of an engine than a game, hence the name. Its purpose is to allow users to build their own playable games in the Pokémon style, with its own mapping interface, scripting language and everything.
The site consists of 3 main sections. There’s the MMO, which is what most users join for, and which allows you to play through regions other users have created. Right now, there’s a server-wide event, which restricts users to the event region for the duration. After the limited event is over, players are free to explore various other areas, including Rica region (shown above; a vividly detailed fan-made region containing over 100 fakemon), Summer Island (last year’s event region) and Retro Kanto (a complete re-creation of Pokémon RBY).
Then you have my favorite part of the website: the Dex. Or Dexes, if you want to be technical. Pokengine contains, to my knowledge anyway, the largest database of Fakemon on the internet. There’s also the Movedex, Itemdex, and Trainerdex, which likewise contain hundreds upon hundreds of entries, both canonical and non. Not just anyone can upload a dex; there is a vetting process where approval is only granted to entrants who show significant progress (50+ sprites), so commitment is a must.
Lastly, there’s the Dev Tools, which consist of Tilefuser & Mapbuilder. Tilefuser is a tool that lets you create maps from tilesets uploaded to the site. Mapbuilder lets you take those tilemaps built in tilefuser and bring them to life with events and scripting using the built-in coding language, jCoad. Just like the Dex features, though, access to these tools is restricted to users that have proven themselves to be invested in project creation.
...Aaaand that about covers it, I think. Pokengine is a very small passion project created by a small team of developers, spriters and coders, over a very long time. (since 2006!) Although what it has now is already excellent, its tools and large database of assets have the potential to be so much more.
If any of that interests you, check it out at Pokengine.org and join the Discord server to learn more!
