Reading We Hunt The Flame. Reached pg 78 and it says that Kulsum's tongue was cut out.
I'll just post a picture with my theories on why that happened.
I haven't even reached the 100 page mark, but these are my theories about why she doesn't have a tongue.

Endrick is a wizard of the Repository, born and raised. His father is one of the more prominent members of that order, and although he and his son have both taken up the study of magic, the two do not always see eye-to-eye.
Something of a loner, those outside of the Repository are apt to mistake his aloof appearance for severity, but those who know him best know that he is anything but. He carries with him a staff of plain wood, which he crafted himself, and a rucksack full of books, scrolls, and other, perhaps, less savory components for spell-casting.
Endrick has spent the last several years of his life wandering the kingdom of Dorneldia, listening for rumors of a peculiar nature. One stormy summer’s day, he happens to cross paths with a young woman who may very well mold his fate in ways he cannot imagine...
