Very random headcanon, I like to think that in his early Shinsengumi days Tetsunosuke was refered as "the pup" of the Wolves of Mibu. Yet, as he grew up and became stronger and shown his ability in battle (could be during the Boshin War) he was nicknamed "the red wolf of the Shinsengumi" because his red hair.
