i know you’re protective over your mom, over hayley. i see it in little things, like when she has a headache and you’re so quick to ask me to help you with making her tea while you grab her medicine, or when she cried when she got alf and you were so quick to wipe her face and tell her “mom, god, that’s the first impression you want him to have of you? crying?” because you knew her well enough to know the way it’d make her smile. i know you’ve worried before about me not coming home, about me breaking both your hearts that way, but i need you to know that i’m just as protective over you, over her, over us. i can match yours and i want you know you never need to worry.
you’ve made all the difference for me and you can trust that i’ll never do anything to jeopardize that. this. you. i’m torn somewhere between considering myself something of a big sister to you and a parent, because some days it feels like one and others, it feels like the other. it works, i think. it’s nontraditional but we work. you keep my head on straight, penelope lou. that’s a lot of weight to put on a 10 year old’s shoulders, but it’s not like you understand the extent of it anyway. you give me reason to stay clean and i’ll always keep you and your mom, you and hayley, at the top of my list of priorities for that. you’re the reason i’m still here. both of you.
