At first Rook and Joseph are inseparable because they've been each other's life for the past 7 years. But eventually they have to acknowledge and readjust to the new (old?) reality: Joseph was wrong. On the other hand he's been the only constant Rook has known for the past 7 years. They've come to know and understand each other on a level no one else ever could, and Rook can't imagine their life without him being a part of it. There is love there in some form. But....Joseph was also wrong.

All of the memories and feelings from the pre-bunker events come rushing back to Rook and it's....a lot to deal with. Their grief and rage and guilt all fight for attention and all of a sudden they can't trust themselves not to hurt anyone. That dark part of themselves they thought they had conquered over the last 7 years, the part John had made sure they would never forget every time they looked in the mirror, starts to rear its ugly head again. They start to feel that old familiar wrath beginning to creep back in. But this time will be different. They won't let themselves be responsible for anyone else's death. Especially Joseph's. So like any healthy, well-rounded individual facing a difficult situation they just.... run away.

They don't know where they're going, all they know is they have to put some distance between them and Joseph in case they end up doing something they regret. This mess of confused feelings will calm down again they're sure. It will all work out. They just need some time and space. After all, they've been cooped up underground together for 7 years. It'll be good for them both to have some time apart.

Little did they know of the types of criminals and gangs the apocalypse would breed. Without really meaning to Rook ends up becoming the local vigilante, rescuing clueless wanderers one after another from ruthless gangs that patrol the area. The crime rate in this post-apocalypse world is really quite something. Rook starts to get a bit of a reputation, and one person even swears they recognize them from "the old cult days" which results in the getup and mask Rook now wears (whoops guess I've got my heart set on that theory). They don't need people reminding them of their past - they just want to forget everything for a little while.

All of sudden it's been a whole year since they left Joseph and...life is actually going ok? I mean relatively, as ok as things can be in a post-apocalyptic world. Rook hasn't felt out of control or consumed by wrath since they left. As much as they miss Joseph, and are tempted to visit their other surviving friends back in what was Hope County, they decide that life is better this way for everyone. At least for now. They're scared that going back and seeing Joseph will set something off in them. Or god forbid they go back to visit the new Prosperity base and somehow, of the few music collections that survived, one of them includes "Only You". They just can't take that risk. It's safer for everyone if Rook isn't around. So they resign themselves to the life of an outcast. For now.
