I feel like my writing is boring, and I end up being much too redundant. I also think I might be over-explaining things? When I write, I have this image in my head of exactly how I want the scene to look, and end up writing too much to get that across. Ways to get over this? You can just ignore this if it didn't make any sense. Sorry
Hi! I completely understand what you mean. I have the opposite problem. I don't put in enough description. If you think your writing is boring, then the issue may be with the idea itself. Is the idea interesting? Would you spend time reading a story like that? Are you passionate about the idea? If not, ditch it. Don't force yourself to write something you don't like. If you still have hope for the idea, try mashing it with another idea you like. Bring new fruit to the table. The problem might also be with the outline. There could be too many informative scenes and not enough action ones or something like that. I think the best way to fix that is by following a template for plot structure. I reccomend this one: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s12/sh/351461da-c105-4df7-bd00-65554bf2a11b/7c75d9eab4307e73You needn't restrict yourself to this outline or force your story into it, but it does help you get a good feeling for how events should flow. As for writing too much, try only allowing yourself one or two exposition paragraphs to set up the scene. All other details must occur as the dialogue or action does. Again, this isn't something I'd reccomend all writers do, but it could help you hone down and limit yourself to the important things. You mentioned feeling redundant, and I've experienced that when writing fight scenes. I think the key is giving scenes that may come off as redundant a unique purpose and to focus on a different aspect of it (depending on the purpose). For example, focus on the emotions in one scene and the senses in another. Don't totally omit something though and make sure to be logical about it. Hope this could help!

I used to write historical romance fiction but I want to switch genres and try my hand at something different. Are there any resources you would recommend for writing a gritty crime thriller, or a mystery novel?
I love trying out different genres!
We've got lots of plot templates available in the Reading Room (and if you want to see a specific genre one, do reach out and let us know!). I've put together a mystery/crime thriller template we released today to hopefully help get you started.

Plot Outline Template: A Novel Deconstructed
A Novel Deconstructed: Simple Plot Outline Template | A. C. Wyatt #amwriting
A couple weeks ago, I started my next novel, and it’s got me thinking a lot about how I plan my manuscripts. I wrote my first two novels alongside a very detailed plot outline, and that worked for me; I finished the first draft of my second novel within four months. The thing is, I like structure. I like knowing where my story is going. But my new story is different from everything I’ve written…
