Sure, he could have just planted the umbrella in the sand. But the alpha loved the visual of being able to bask in his glory while the weak older beta was forced to maintain a rigid posture and hold the umbrella steady, knowing he would face severe consequences if the alpha felt anything out of place. Such is the life for those born at the top of the hierarchy.
