Please Get Me Through This
Say it like a prayer,
When things are getting tough.
Say it as a plea
When you've had enough.
Please get me through this,
Get me to its end,
Say it whenever you need
Preferably to a friend.
oh I just realised I can put my upp rewatch thoughts here instead of just throwing them on my private twitter account to rot ohoho
Anyone else kind of losing it thinking abt the implications of this ^? we rly do not have very much information on norahs relationship w her parents (especially compared to how often isaac n Williams parents come up) so I will warn u 99% of this is me reading way too much into likely unintentional things and the byproduct of months of rotating norlah around in my brain trying to figure out Why Shes Like that....Apolocheese in advance^_^"
But anyway . Like ok so we all know norah is a super duper huge perfectionist and she gets very shaken up at even the thought of being (perceived as) even 1% less than the perfect a+ model student model daughter or at being caught in a lie ... Domt think its a very big leap at all to assume this overachieving mindset has been drilled into her by her parents . There's that moment in 1x01, after they get caught by the police officer, where norah says she needs to go talk to her parents or they "will ground her for 8 days" .
and theres also this ^ ... (which like do not even get me started on how many times she asks william if they can go check on her parents bjt he KEEPS coming up w detours And how this adds a whole other layer like not only did she want to check on them to make sure theyre not sick and not only did she want to tell them about the corner store before officer donalds did shes also like. Kind of implied to be a little bit afraid/worried ?? abt how they'll react? / how they'll punish her for being late/committing a crime/not doing her daily flute practice ?? adds another layer of urgency there i feel like )
HOWEVER. I think what's kind of most interesting to me (and this is most likely not intentional on jrwis part but its been kind of absorbed into my interpretation of her so too late) is how Norah's feelings abt her parents dont seem to totally fully match up to how they act...or! at least how they act in public/when other ppl r around. but out of character I think this might mostly be because of improv/lack of discussion reasons but its ok cuz its interesting. I think the reason that Norah seems so worried about punishments that are relatively less harsh (norah's assumption: grounded for 8 days. Reality: her lizard book being taken away. Norah's assumption: her dad will get mad at her for backtalking and make her walk home. reality: he gets another nurse to drive her home) is because these "punishments" we see ALWAYS happen when other people are around. I think this ties back to Norah's (n by extension her parents) obsession with their family's appearances/reputation
Norah is very obviously aware of how she is perceived, especially by other adults, and even if she wasnt isaac and william spell it out very clearly for her
and she very obviously feels a lot of pressure to upkeep this image thats been impressed upon her . even william n isaac have this image of the fleetwoods being like the perfect, happy, ideal family that they compare theirs to . But i think that might just be another part of the performance . not to imply they like abuse her behind closed doors or anything, I just think it could explain why norah seems so worried about it if theyre harsher/put a lot more pressure on her when not in public n being actively observed . I think this also adds a whole other layer to Norah's intense distaste for lying. Because she kind of is all the time, or at least not being totally honest. Also why i really like her "i dont think its a trick..." line from s1. Ah i love how s2 is reconctextualizing so many of those litrle throwaway lines or moments from s1... much to ponder anyway. thats basically all I have to say Ok! Bye!
i genuinely need to be able to sit down and watch domething. i get so distracted easilyby othermedia its painful but absolutely amaizngattheamawtime
