Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) This is Nas' eighth studio album. Calling an album "Hip Hop Is Dead" raised a lot of questions for me. If hip hop is dead is he referring to all hip hop or just most of it? Perhaps he might be litterally saying all his favouite rappers have passed away, meaning hip hop is dead. In reality Nas does a great job of explaining his take on the state of hip hop these days, and it's really hard to disagree with him to be honest; especially considering the line that goes something like " If you don't think hip hop is dead than you're likely the problem". Nas comes over very charismatic on this album. It's nearly impossible to not admire Nas for how hungry and motivated he still is this far in his career. He's been incrediblely consistent his whole career and he seems to have a tight grip on his top 5 status title. This album also has some of the best production I've seen from nas since his early classic albums. I love the smooth, sort of funky yet simplistic beats on tracks like "You Can't Kill Me" and "Where Are They now?"; not to mention the incredible Lyicism and flow on just about every track. Hip Hop Is dead also has some great features as well. It's really cool to hear The Game rap with Nas. Game grew up on Nas and now he's rapping with the hero he got his style from on "Hustlers". They have great chemistry together. Snoop Dogg had a great feature as well on "Play On Playa" Snoop has a nice smooth verse. I didn't know he was on the song so it was a nice surprise to hear his instantly recognizable voice. The Kanye feature was sort of weird to hear. You can definitely tell he's early in his career by his young Kanye voice. It Threw me off because this is so late in Nas' career and his voice is so aged at this point. I guess i never realised how far apart their career are apart from each other. Overall i think this is one of Nas' best albums so far. Nas remains one of the smartest and consistently on top of the games out there and he keeps giving more examples of why. 9.2/10.
