The Optimizer:

Order lists, workshop links, stacks of stockpiles, pathing research, diagonal paths, the factory sphere, burrowing to the extreme, castes by trade, a repeat rock block job, traps (specially designed for cave-ins or drownings or fire), u-bends, caravan only-routes, pumps (lots of them often magma safe): the optimizer seeks to produce a productive and efficient fortress that not only rejects aesthetics and typical design 'tropes'. How small can make the pasture before the llamas starve? Death to pandas, choosy buggers.

The Scientist:

The most infamous group if you've ever heard of Dwarf Fortress and the least ethically inclined when it comes to the treatment of dwarves. These players want to pick apart the workings of the game trying to find bugs and edge cases. They'll work out how to get minecarts to fly up a ramp without any rollers. They'll tirelessly attempt to tame hostile animals to see what will happen. They'll forge and remelt various objects to see if they can produce metal from nothing. They'll and Got a Forgotten beast that causes a dwarf's skin to rot off? The Scientist will capture the beast and exploit the dust to make super soldiers devoid of pain (and skin).

There are two grades of dwarven science:

science is run-of-the-mill stuff carried out through observation of the environment.

SCIENCE involves a deliberate choice. lets work out what the Armok's going on with the Military menu or what the properties of these materials are.

!!SCIENCE!! is very dwarfy and usually involves magma and is carried out in a living fortress in blatant disregard for the danger it poses

The Drifter:

This player gets a new fortress idea every week starts one in a quick burst and by the time it's the end of the week will have a new idea and move on to that instead. These players usually start up the fortress and do not go beyond self-sufficiency. But their worlds are very cool to explore in adventure mode, with unusual sites dotted around the map.

The Architect:

Pencils out with a pair of thick glasses and wearing a black turtle neck, this player chooses the path of aesthetics. Whether that's recreating the mines of Moria, building a Cathedral or carving out an underground village lit by magma lamps. Expect beautiful bedrooms, magnificent mosaics, and tall taverns. Do not confuse them with the roleplayer or optimizer. The architect values their vision over the dwarves, they are merely a means to an end, window-dressing, the fortunate inhabitants.

The Novice:

This player recently discovered the game. They wouldn't know a pump stack from a magma piston and that's fine. They'll probably pick up the game once generate a world and not get much further, then give up and go watch Kruggsmash. Repeat the cycle everywhere between a week or a year or two. Finally, they get a self-sufficient fortress in a neat little pocket world with some odd design choices and narrow corridors. Then the dragon arrives...

The Adventurer:

You actually play fortress mode? I love the detail of adventurer mode. Want to fight a baron? Take a book from his collection and beat him to death with it. I can't actually remember the hotkeys but I do have the quick reference printed out. Fortress mode just feels so impersonal and overwhelming you know.

The Legendeer:

This is the closest dwarf fortress gets to power gaming. They produce ridiculous projects in Dwarf Fortress. Got 100 dwarves in your fortress; they have 1000. Captured a forgotten beast; they've made it their mission to capture all of them like FUN pokémon. They're busy building the next generation of dwarfputer.
