It starts with Daisyโs chubby little fingers grabbing the neon purple kinetic sand and smushing it into Lukeโs hoodie sleeve. He laughs, not even pretending to care, because sheโs giggling with her whole heart. Her cheeks puffed out, tongue peeking out as she concentrates on pressing tiny plastic stamps into the sand.
โLook, Dada,โ she mumbles proudly, holding up a slightly lopsided heart-shaped mold. The sand crumbly halfway through.
But he gasps anyway, โNo way! Thatโs the best heart Iโve ever seen.โ
She beams. โItโs for you,โ she adds, placing it gently into his hand.
And though it immediately falls apart, it doesnโt matter. He still keeps it on the table like itโs the with a million dollars.
Then later, when her fingers are too tired and the sandโs all over the table, they switch to a fidget cube and a squishy stress ball thatโs made to look like an apple, that somehow ends up being called โMr. Chomp.โ Luke acts like it bit him every time she hands it to him, yelping dramatically until sheโs shrieking with laughter.
When Luke comes back from roadies, Daisy is always waiting at the door with a smile on her face, and her arms wide open.
But tonight? Sheโs half-asleep on the couch when he walks in.
Vanessa meets him in the kitchen and whispers, โShe tried to wait up,โ then kisses his cheek.
He grins, tugging a tiny plastic unicorn keychain from his jacket pocket. โThis oneโs sparkly,โ he whispers, tiptoeing to where Daisyโs sprawled in a blanket fort of pillows.
She stirs just enough to see him crouch beside her. โDada?โ she mumbles, rubbing one eye.
โHey, Bug. I brought you something,โ he whispers, holding out the tiny trinket.
And her eyes widen like he had handed her a diamond. โUni-cornโฆโ she breathes, immediately clutching it to her chest.
He picks her up and carries her to her bed, tucking her in again and brushing his fingers through her hair. โEvery roadie,โ he promises, โyou get one thing. โCause I missed you a lot.โ
Daisy closes her eyes, unicorn in hand.
โMissed you, too, Dada...โ She mumbles before sleep takes over.

so, it's not awkward exactly, but like things are very much different, because they worry about saying the wrong thing to each other, but they pretty much fall back into their friendship
but, yes there are 100% some stolen glance, and then they end up looking away quickly (how no one notices is insane fr). Yes too the hand brushes also, because they'll go to reach for the same soda, walk back from the lake and bump shoulders, etc. they also have like "inside jokes" where like they'll both laugh over something stupid, which then starts to feel like flirting, but then they're just laughing harder. and then probably the most like awkward thing is when it's late in the lake house and everyone is asleep and there's this like mental battle that they both have of like do we talk about it? do we do it again?....but they don't say anything

So, it starts when night when he's on the road. He's in an uncomfy hotel bed with his headphones on, and the lights off.
The city they're in is noisy outside, but his thoughts are louder. Esmae's on the phone with him, and without even realizing he just goes "Can you just... talk to me?"
She blinks. "About what?"
"Doesnโt matter. Just...Need to hear your voice"
So she talks. About the book sheโs been reading, the cookie she burnt earlier, and how Luke called her 6 times that day asking about towels (Istg, Luke is constantly bugging her like a little brother). And she's not saying anything that's important...at least to her she's not, but to Quinn he's the most calm he's been all day.
"...and then I made tea, because you know I always do" ...And he's asleep.
And after that, it's their thing. When he's stressed, anxious, his thoughts are too loud, etc. He just texts her "Call me?" And of course she does. Sometimes she reads to him, sometimes she rambles about her day, and when they're together she just softly talks and rubs soft circles on his chest.
And that's also how they both realize that falling asleep together is much better than apart.
