Dakota James, 23, a Duquesne university graduate, was last seen on January 25, 2017 in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at around 11:49 p.m.. He was last seen on surveillance walking through Katz Plaza in the Cultural District at 11:46 p.m.; he was on his phone, texting a message to his father. Before he went missing, he and a co-worker had been spotted at the Wood Street T Station, where the co-worker left him after he requested a ride through an app. He was thought to be meeting up with a date that he found on the dating app Grindr. The same night of his disappearance, Dakota was refused service at Images for being too intoxicated, and was given some water and started eating someone else’s pizza. Dakota was also seen with a woman.
On March 6, 2017, a woman walking her dog spotted a body about 30 feet into the Ohio River at around 8:45 a.m. and called 911. On the body, they found Dakota’s wallet, with identification, and his cell phone. The body was identified that moment at Dakota James, who was missing for almost 40 days. Pittsburgh police have still not commented whether it was accidental or foul play, but they did confirm that the area where Dakota was found had been searched the weekend before he was found.
