a book series that makes use of "anachronistic" language in a way that really feels organic for the period, IMO, is Piratica by Tanith Lee
set in an explicitly alternate universe c. 1810, the first book managed to include the sentence "Well, groovy, thou art a klutz," and make it sound 100% Golden Age of PiracyTM. even though the author used words from wildly different eras, she captured the cadence of 18th/early 19th century working-class/criminal slang so well that I literally just had to look up whether "groovy" was an older word than I previously thought
god those books were so good. I should reread them

IT'S ABOUT A DAUGHTER OF A PIRATE WHO'S BEEN ATTENDING AN ALL GIRLS' SCHOOL™ AND AFTER A HIT TO THE HEAD LEAVES TO FINDS HER MOTHER'S OLD CREW AND SAIL ACROSS THE SEVEN SEAS AND EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It was a book series by Tanith Lee I read in Junior High and it always stuck with me. I remember the first 2 books. I don't remember finishing it. I should one of these days. But it was about a young pirate woman and I remember the villain in one of the books being a cool pirate queen character and I loved her. Anyways that post that I mentioned it in the tags just made me think of it!
i am truly going insane fr like i- not me having an au for something I haven't even sEEN HELP-
anyways Piratica by Tanith Lee and Our Flag Means Death crossover where Artemisia and her crew meets everyone from ofmd (honestly bet Art and Stede would be friends bc similar vibe to backstory???????? to my understanding????)
i don't remember enough about Piratica or know enough about ofmd bUT LISTEN- I'll tell everything I remember about Piratica under the cut in a bit but basically I'm just going bdjzbfjdjdh rn (actually wait Elizabeth Swann too-)
but basically just Art and her crew meeting ofmd crew/s(?) that's all I got rn
PIRATICA SPOILERS (including major ones):
so the story starts with Artemisia Blastside, a 16 yr old girl in the 1700th century England that's going to an internat only for girls when she gets hit in the head, making her suddenly remember her mother, the late Molly Blastside (might get last names wrong here) that died in an explosion when she was 4. Her mother, Molly, was a famous pirate by the name Piratica and Art, tired of her life and school, decides to find her old crew to return to the seven seas and take after her mother. Her father tries to stop her but ultimately, she gets away and through some Drama evantually finds the crew and return to the seas! But the crew is different from what she remembered, with several of them seasick and not at all as fearsome and brave as in her memories. Turns out they weren't actually real pirates at all, only actors in a famous play. The explosion had been an accident. Art still wants to be a pirate and live up to her mother's legacy, no matter if it was real or not and the crew joins her on her adventure (and if a certain Felix also joins them, first as a prisoner, later as a part of the crew, well that's just a lil treat for Art wink wonk)
They even find the treasure!! Before they get evantually caught and sent to the hanging tree (galgbacken, can't for the life of me remember the word rn) BUT!!! THEN COMES THE CONFESSION!! this scene has fr stayed with me for years, far longer than I actually managed to finish the first book. It goes like this; Art, Félix and her crew is sentenced to death for piracy. Felix is just about to be hanged (or if it was Art? don't remember exactly but it still got the VIBE) and suddenly Art yells out her love for Felix, in front of the whole audience and everyone gathered there and they're freed!! with a pardon and promise to not go back to the seas (which, obviously Art isn't possible to keep for too long)
There are around three? books i think, but I've only read the first two and it's the first one I remember anything at all from (second book is basically Art and Felix is married and Art wants to return to the sea and piracy, or at least sailing) and apparently I remembered quite a lot anyways fhdbfnbjd

Pirate books!! 📚 Have you read the Piratica triology by Tanith Lee? If not I highly recommend them; it's YA with a very interesting plot and a current of found family o(^▽^)o
Wwwwhoooaaa this was buried ever so deep in my drafts I am. Sorry mate. o.o
But no, I haven’t!! I haven’t had much time to read for a hobby for a while now, school’s kinda sapping my reading energy out you know? But I’ll definitely check this rec out, I’m sure I’ll have some time over the winter break to try some new reads!
Also I always heckin’ enjoy intriguing plots and found family yes gimme. XD Thanks for the rec!
okay so I'm re-reading Piratica again after YEARS (I swear it's been over a year since I even picked up a real book, even more a real book in SWEDISH bc f a n f i c s) and!! my little brother seems to be interested in it too!! And I love how Art is like "fuck this, fuck you, fuck everything, I'm taking my life in my own hands and you are coming with me. Whether you ike it or not." I just wish I could get the third book too (unless that's fake??) bc I have Piratica I and II
Are there any books which you would have read when you were younger if they came out sooner?
This is one of mine.
