Portents
The sound of boots on ship-deck preceded the question: âWhatâs the entrails say, Cal?â
The norn curled his lip and spread out the guts and gristle of the shark across the deck, closing his eyes as he brought himself a bit of focus. Between the cawing of the hungry gulls and the none-too-gentle motion of the sea, it took a while, but finally...
âIâll be damned there, Hoyt. Itâs a grave omen. Doom upon ye family. All that.â
âUpon whoâs family?â asked Hoyt, running a blood-crusted hand through his greying beard. The Norn just shrugged.
âSomeoneâs. Maybe yers. Maybe mine. Maybe Captainâs.â
âHogwash,â said Hoyt, âisnât any doom tâ be had on MY family that hasnât already swooped down. Must be Carverâs.â
âBut Carver ainât got a family.â
âNo, but he did spend a whole month in a brothel, Cal.â
âAye. That he did.â Cal looked up, his sun-baked features scrunching to read the horizon. âYâthink the wreckâs around here?â
âIâm sure itâs nearby. Weâll get the boys on it rightaway.â Hoyt sniffed and turned to stroll back down the deck, to the rebreather room. âAinât going to let olâ Captain Bronzeburr just sit there, portents or no.â
