How to stick out like a sore thumb
#47 – 2026 May 01 – Vesileppis Areena, Leppävirta
Vappu is possibly my favorite holiday. Not because I'm a party animal (I'm not) but because for me it's really performative in a fun way, namely that I can pretend to still be a student and show off my (still growing) patch collection.
It's also performative in that Once Upon A Time some people made it An Issue that I don't technically don't have the right to wear the student cap because I didn't graduate high school here, so I kind of wear it to (imaginarily) show them up, considering my other educational qualifications. Because in Actual Finland nobody cares. You sure don't see people complaining about folks putting the hats on their dogs. (It's my tradition to bring this up every Vappu.)
Anyway, I decided it'd be more fun to wear my patch collection to this show instead of doing my usual people-watching walk around Kaivopuisto. Not least because pink is kind of the theme color for the album.
The hotel had sold accommodation packages with a concert ticket and a bed in a shared hotel room. I didn't know about this and had naturally snagged my ticket the instant they were available (while eating breakfast on the ferry to Stockholm). By the time I decided I should get the other arrangements ready for the trip they were of course out of these packages so I booked a whole room to myself. (Later they'd put out more of these packages, even though I'd thought the show was sold out????) On the one hand I think it could have been fun to share a room with another fan—I don't like to put it this way but it often feels like people are hesitant about conversing with me unless we're forced to be in the same space. On the other, though, my experience living in this general eastern part of the country is that you really can't assume somebody knows any English in the same way as you might assume in more populated regions (especially with the fan demographic) and it could have ended up really ... awkward.
Continuing on...
The Pinkpocalypse continues
Senpai will NOT be at book fair (best fair). I guess there's enough going on in his schedule anyway, IIRC the benefit concert for the Pinkpocalypse pink ribbon campaign is the same weekend. To be honest I am kind of relieved. As much as it'd be fun to show up in one of my whole fangirl outfits, I think the attention I'd get outside of the context of seeing him would stress me out.
They also have these cheesy charity postcards with lyrics on them. It was a super weird coincidence that when I reached for one on the rack without really looking at it, it was the one with the exact part of the song I was listening to...
Nice touch having the balloon picture with the text from Nena laulaa ilmapalloistaan (the song title is printed on the back so you'd figure this out eventually)
I also picked up a couple (more) magazines with interviews in them. There's probably going to be more in the coming weeks just because Pinkpocalypse.
While waiting for the tram this morning, I noticed some familiar faces on the other platform... (oh yeah it was foggy AF again)
Turns out they're the celebrity endorsement for this year's cancer awareness ribbon campaign, which was revealed today. (It also means they got to create the design printed on them.)
I'm personally not really a fan of the awareness ribbon phenomenon, buuuuuuuut this is how you get me
(The cause is worthy, nothing against it, I just wish its color wasn't pink. I'd have thought they'd do the mental health ribbon, which is lime green...)
Meanwhile, I'm over here, not taking myself too seriously. The challenge to paint something pink has been completed. Back to the Suzerain of Desire.
