49. coming home

Steve opened the door to his apartment and held the door open for Bucky to walk in first. He slowly stepped in, looking around with a careful gaze. Bucky was still so mentally fragile despite the countless, endless days of therapy and rehabilitation. For months, Bucky couldn’t even bear seeing Steve because it just triggered too much all at once in his brain. But now, now, finally, Bucky was able to come home with Steve.

Steve decided to have the two of them live in an apartment together, as opposed to Stark Tower, where all the others lived. Bucky might’ve been better than he was before, but Steve didn’t think he was ready for all of the high tech-ness that was Stark Tower.

"You can go all the way in," Steve said gently, causing Bucky to cut him a look

"I know I can. Ain’t gotta treat me like a baby," he said gruffly

Steve nodded and mentally kicked himself. He wasn’t trying to make Bucky feel patronized or like a child, he was just trying to make him feel comfortable.

Bucky walked around the rest of the apartment, looking at everything carefully. He ran his finger along the books on the bookshelf, nodding to himself.

"These…I remember these books. You were always reading them," Bucky said, looking back at Steve for confirmation.

Steve nodded “Yep, I was a uh, real bookworm,”

Bucky nodded again and kept walking around; looking at things and whispering the names for newer things to himself. When he got to the fridge he opened it slowly and looked in, and then turned back to Steve, eyes wide.

"That is a lot of food. Back…back in the day we didn’t have this much, I remember," he said

Steve chuckled and nodded “Yeah, we were pretty broke,”

"Hmm," Bucky said, still looking in the fridge 

"Do you see anything you want in there? I can make whatever you want for dinner. Or at least I can try," Steve asked, gesturing to the fridge

Bucky shrugged “Whatever you want,” he said as he closed the fridge and continued walking around the apartment.

By the time Bucky was done looking around and getting comfortable, Steve had prepared dinner for them. It was simple, spaghetti and meatballs with a glass of apple juice to drink. 

Bucky ate fast and messily to say the least. Steve almost wanted to tell him to slow down, but if there was one thing Bucky wasn’t used to, it was actually having food. In addition to growing up without much, they hadn’t exactly had him on a 5-star diet plan while he was the Winter Soldier either. 

So Steve let him be, smiling when Bucky looked up and said “What’re you lookin’ at?” in his distinctly Brooklyn drawl. It was times like this when Steve felt like he’d gotten the old Bucky back.

That night, Steve watched from the doorway as Bucky managed to drift off to sleep. He smiled to himself as he watched Bucky’s stomach rise and fall.
