Hi! Since your a really good artist and you have quite a few followers I was wondering if you could tell me if theres a lot of pressure on you as an artist on tumblr because i've been thinking about posting my art on tumblr but im afraid that ill feel a lot of pressure on myself to constantly post to make anyone who follows me happy but I know I wont be able to constantly post quality art. Any reply would help thanks!!! (also ur one of my fave artist on tumblr and congrats on dan picking ur art)
Ah, yes, passive pressure is a HUGE facet of posting content on the internet.
But you know what? The internet doesn’t even have to factor in here. Regardless of the platform you share your content on, you will ALWAYS feel pressure. You will always get feedback, whether good or bad. You will always want to please everyone, and that is not going to be possible.
Honestly, yes I do feel quite a bit of pressure. Whenever I look at my follower count or notes on a piece, I always want it to be higher, because that’s the mentality of the internet - it’s all about numbers. And it really shouldn’t be.
I’ve noticed that every time I post content that is NOT Dan and/or Phil related, there is a direct negative correlation with notes and followers (as in, if I post phanart, it goes up, and when I post non-phanart, literally almost always I actually LOSE followers (not just on Tumblr, but across all my platforms), and ALWAYS get fewer notes). But at the end of the day, I try not to let that stop me from sharing my art. My blog is full of content not related to Dan and Phil, because I love drawing other things. Obviously I am human and love watching little numbers increase on things (and damn, that activity line graph? I freakin love line graphs), but I don’t just draw phanart for that. I love drawing those dorks haha.
Every single time I hover over the “Publish” or “Share” button I feel a bit of anxiety. Will people like it? Will it get any notes? How many followers will I gain from this? Even if the answer is zero, I still post it. Because it makes me happy sharing my art with the world. I know I will always have friends who will like what I post, and that keeps me going.
To improve at art, you must share it with a public platform. Yes, you will get negative feedback, but sometimes it’ll be constructive, and it’ll allow you to step outside your comfort zone and experiment and, in the end, you will be a better artist for it.
TL;DR: Produce, publish, gain feedback, improve, publish again. You will feel pressure to please, yes, but ABOVE ALL PLEASE YOURSELF. If you want to share your stuff, then by all means, share it. There will always be people who appreciate what you create :)
