6 Tips on how to Crack a Telephonic Job Interview

You may think “Oh it’s just a phone interview” but if you can’t get past the initial phone screening, you likely aren’t getting an in-person interview. Here are some tips I think may be useful for customer service jobs:

*Disclaimer: This is just from my personal experience and may not be applicable to all interviews and interviewers*

1. Don’t be afraid to share your experiences.

“I cashiered at ---” And? What did that entail? What kind of things did you learn to do doing that?

“I made sandwiches at---” What does that mean to this job? So you have food prep experience etc.?

“I stocked” Again what did you learn? How is this useful?

More than “oh i did this” is super important and helpful in helping your interviewer determine where to put you or where you might be a good fit at the job you are interviewing for. Don’t be afraid to open up about the things you did at your previous jobs. No job experience? No problem. You can talk about anything that required you to learn and utilize potential skills. Did you volunteer somewhere? What did you do, what did you learn, how did you improve? Same with clubs or internships, anything helps.

2.Enthusiasm can go a long way

If you sound tired or bored chances are the person interviewing you has already written you off. Sure you might  need the job but if you can’t take the time to act like you care about the place you plan on working at to the person interviewing on the phone then it shows, especially in customer service related jobs, that you can’t be expected to be enthusiastic when assisting guests. Sometimes if you are enthusiastic enough, it might score you an interview anyway even if your work-related experience may be lacking because it shows an eagerness to learn.

3. Unless stated otherwise, call them yourself if you haven’t heard back in a couple of days

Even if they initially turned you down after reviewing your application, chances are they will still pull it up if you call and go over it with you allowing you to explain or perhaps sway them as to why you should be hired.

4. If you have a friend who recommended you, feel free to bring them up BUT do not rely heavily on the fact that you have connections

I personally feel that you should be able to prove to me why you should be hired with you own merits--I do not care who you are friends with, it does not necessarily make you a good fit.
