New York City was vast and exciting; a place where you set your sights high, and moved up in the world, at least that was how Sebastian saw it. This was his first time in a city so lively—he was from a more elegant place, he’d flown all the way from Paris to meet up with a research team in New York. Essix Co. was a paranormal research team that worked closely with the government in researching paranormal activities around the world. Sebastian’s family was closely intertwined with the organization and Sebastian with his unique talents was often sent out to the site of such activities.
This was like any other trip and Sebastian didn’t think much of it as he stepped out of the taxi cab and was greeted by a female with long brown hair and glasses and an African American man in a tux. The two were polite enough, but Sebastian couldn’t help but wonder about all the secrecy that was going into their meeting.
“Sir Sebastian… a pleasure to make your acquaintance, I’m Abigail Barns… I’m the manager of this project… and this is my associate, Michael Borgin.” The woman spoke formally a hand extended. The dark skinned man next to her bowed his hand also extending. Sebastian didn’t wait to take up their hands in greeting, quickly rushing through the formalities and then glancing up at the tall building towering above him.
“H-hi…” he muttered, suspicious green eyes trailing up the length of the building, “—is this really Essix Co?”
“Yes… this is our main headquarters … all our research facilities are located here, with several spread out across the globe. This one however is our primary location,” Abigail explained matter-of-factly. Soon she was leading them through the fancy slider doors, Sebastian following after her with Michael at the rear. Sebastian had never witnessed such a facility; inside everything was modernized and high tech—whereas Sebastian was used to more antique set ups. He was somewhat overwhelmed by it all, but took it in calmly as they made their way into the elevator.
Sebastian was quiet in the elevator, only glancing over at Michael curiously as they went up. Something about the man was strange; he seemed super uptight, like at any moment he could just explode. Sebastian had caught onto this out on the street, but was doing his best to not be intimidated by it.
The elevator doors swung open and the three of them stepped out into a large laboratory. The room was big and open, with high tech equipment spread out as well as several tables that were overstocked with ancient artifacts. Sebastian was already getting strange readings from some of the objects in the room, but they seemed to be faint now. His eyes just shifted around to get a feel of all the people involved. There was a muscular guy wearing a bandana who looked to be the most out of place of the group, he was fiddling around with some paranormal reading device near him was a younger man who was most likely the photographer, two women were at the back of the room, watching some video on a projector and then there was an older, well-dressed man sitting at one of the tables, with glasses and his head in a rather large book.
At the sound of their entrance, the older man glanced up from his book, fingering his glasses and tilting his head down so that he could get a better look at who’d arrived.
“Ah yes… is this Sebastian?” The older man questioned, standing from his seat and walking over, he was hunched over slightly as if he had back issues, Sebastian had also taken note of the fact that the man had a cane, wondering if it was really wise to be taking him along on site. “A pleasure… the name’s Daniel,” The old man offered, just as the two women in the back of the room noticed the commotion and eased over.
“Hi, I’m Maribel,” one of the woman spoke up, she sounded overly excited, like this was her first operation. Next to her the other woman nodded in the direction of Sebastian.
“… Vanessa…” She was the complete opposite of Maribel, her tone was darker and she seemed to be bothered by the entire ordeal, not even bothering to really look Sebastian in the eyes. The woman fingered her black hair behind her ear and frowned, turning to walk away back to her projector. Sebastian merely smiled at all the people, he wasn’t at all used to meeting this many people at once, yet his eyes turned expectantly to the last two men, waiting to hear their names.
