Zuko is born, claws for nails, scales faintly visible on his arms, from the elbows to the tips of his fingers and across his right cheek. Two tiny horns atop his head.
Azula is born, talons for nails, feathers framing her face while blending into her hair, lighting herself on fire as a baby and not getting hurt.
Both of them enjoying high up places. The closer they are to the sky, the better. Both of them sleeping in nests made up of blankets and pillows rather than a bed. When they were really little, they shared a single nest before making their own two separate ones.
AU based on my last poll - After a horrible gala, Zuko, who was never banished but was burned, and Azula get into an argument. One where Zuko wishes he was the best firebender in the world and Azula laughs saying the day he becomes a better firebender than her is the day she becomes immortal. Meanwhile, Agni is pissed at the Royal Family for what they’ve done in his name and all the destruction they’ve caused. He’s so angry that when he hears the siblings argument he decides to kill two birds with one stone: get rid of two members of the Royal Family and replace them with creatures he actually likes. The next day, Ozai declares that his children are dead. Their killers? A dragon and phoenix that were in their rooms that morning.
Let's add on to Dragon!Zuko and Phoenix!Azula, shall we?
They're both considered to be blessed by Agni.
Ursa makes their nest up until they start to them on their own.
Azula preens her feathers. She also molts. She refuses to leave her room when she does.
Zuko sheds his scales. He has to have someone nearby because he has tried to eat it. Yes. He has succeeded. That's why he has to be watched when he's shedding. No. He doesn't like being watched. It means no scaley snack.
Both can go a long time without blinking. It's unnerving with normal eyes alone, but Zuko has slits for pupils and Azula's dilate a lot depending on who you are. The bigger they are, the higher the chances she'll jump you. You never know if it's an attack or not. Like, 95% it's an attack.
Zuko's scales are red with a golden tint to them, while Azula's feathers are black with a blue tint to them.
Zuko's scar heals with scales over them.
Azula had only ever lit herself ablaze when she was a baby, she had spent years learning not to. It wasn't until her loss against Zuko and Katara during Sozin's Comet that she self-combusted again.
Because I gave Zuko his shedded skin eating habit in the Dragon!Zuko Phoenix!Azula AU, I wanted to give Azula a habit based off birds.
So, I looked around. And this is what I decided:
Azula's habits aren't seen as bad as Zuko's because it isn't something she does to herself. She doesn't eat her feathers when she molts. Her self-combustion just comes naturally due to her being a phoenix. Her habit can and has been seen as vain.
She loves looking at herself. She carries around a hand mirror just so she can look at herself if there isn't a reflective surface nearby.
She also has this very minor habit that she and Zuko share: hoarding tiny, shiny, objects, and the occasional random thing that doesn't fit that category. They don't always collect things, and most of their collecting comes after their shedding/molting time and they only ever hold onto one or two things when they do. Some things that can be found in their hoard include: one of Mai's knives, a spoon, several rocks, one of Iroh's pens, a broken mirror, a ring from...someone (they don't know, they just found it and claimed it), one of Aang's marbles, and Sokka's boomerang, which often gets put in there (yes, he goes into their hoard just to get it back, yes, he has tried giving them a different one).

I just remembered this really cute TikTok of a girl getting food ready for some kittens and she's just constantly getting them off her as she makes their food, and at one point she pauses and just goes "who is it???"

Iroh has gone to the Southern Watertribe to talk about a peace treaty seeing as his father ended the war. This is can be either before the Southern Raiders or before Hakoda left for the war. Your choice.
And he's there, talking to the men of the SWT, all of them looking at him suspiciously, when one of them, or maybe Sokka who ran over to see what was going on, noticed a small....child??? Creature??? Was it a spirit??? run down the ramp and climb onto Iroh's back.
Without looking back, Iroh just asks a simple, "yes?"
And the the small spirit child creature gives a tiny roar and Iroh decides now is the time to introduce his nephew, the Dragon Prince, Zuko (alternatively, he introduces them to his niece, the Phoenix Princess, Azula).
