A little bit rock, a little bit pop, a little bit of everything, really, Philadelphia based PHNTMSâ new single, Carabelle (seen / heard here) features rich emotive vocals, spare but beautifully played instrumentation, just a touch of reverb and a melody that is instantaneously infectious. These are qualities of all great songs and PHNTMS has them all here on display.
Lyrically, Carabelle, sung by vocalist Alyssa Gambino, is a tale of a toxic, yet intoxicating, relationship gone South. Itâs that taste that you get at the end: a sense of loss and relief doing battle with each other:
âCarabelle got a dirty mouth
But I kissed it and wanted more
Carabelle  always talking shit
Acting like sheâll never get caughtâ
The song continues to describe Carabelleâs unfaithfulness that finally brings thing to an end, even though there is a desperate thirst that canât be quenched now. Unlike most relationship-gone-wrong songs, the sentiments here are not subtle, they are in your face so that you must take notice. Itâs a refreshing frankness in music that we need more of.
PHNTMS is Alyssa, Adam Jessamine (bass), Mikal Smith (guitars), and Gene Murphy (drums). The band combines arena rock and 1960âČs style soul to form a unique and pleasing sound.
