Listen: “Rather Be Lonely” by PHNTMS

“Rather Be Lonely” by PHNTMS Pop, rock and a sweet sprinkle of the unknown come together to give life to “Rather be lonely” by an amazing indie band, say hello to PHNTMS. With this track they not only get my attention but get to claim a plot in the lands of the Wolf in a Suit as the song is absolute perfection. They know how to balance the vocals, the instruments and make sure the verses flow…

A little bit rock, a little bit pop, a little bit of everything, really, Philadelphia based PHNTMS’ new single, Carabelle (seen / heard here) features rich emotive vocals, spare but beautifully played instrumentation, just a touch of reverb and a melody that is instantaneously infectious.  These are qualities of all great songs and PHNTMS has them all here on display.

Lyrically, Carabelle, sung by vocalist Alyssa Gambino, is a tale of a toxic, yet intoxicating, relationship gone South. It’s that taste that you get at the end: a sense of loss and relief doing battle with each other:

“Carabelle got a dirty mouth But I kissed it and wanted more Carabelle  always talking shit Acting like she’ll never get caught”

The song continues to describe Carabelle’s unfaithfulness that finally brings thing to an end, even though there is a desperate thirst that can’t be quenched now. Unlike most relationship-gone-wrong songs, the sentiments here are not subtle, they are in your face so that you must take notice. It’s a refreshing frankness in music that we need more of.

PHNTMS is Alyssa, Adam Jessamine (bass), Mikal Smith (guitars), and Gene Murphy (drums). The band combines arena rock and 1960′s style soul to form a unique and pleasing sound. PHNTMS share new single ‘Honesty’

Philadelphia based rock band PHNTMS have released their new single. Entitled ‘Honesty’ the track showcases clashing percussion, confident guitars and passionate lyrics.

‘Honesty’ circles around the hurt that comes from being in a relationship and wanting to be loved but not ready to open yourself up to the idea of love. It speaks about the moment you recognize your partner is trying to hold you up through your own personal battles, but it’s far too much weight for them to carry.

With half of the band identifying as queer, PHNTMS also hope to reach out to and support the LGBTQA+ community. Drummer Gene Murphy confides, “We openly talk about lesbian relationships in our music and we want to bring hope to anyone who is in the closet and doesn’t feel safe coming out. Whether you are out as queer or not, your identity is valid and if our music helps you escape heteronormativity for a brief moment.”

Trying to date during a global pandemic isn’t exactly ideal. With everyone practicing social distancing and self quarantining, first dates aren’t really what they used to be.
