This is in no way to shame anyone, but considering my recent scan alert post is blowing up, I'm really surprised at how little people know about Internet safety. Maybe it's because I'm a millennial and I grew up with technology growing with me or it's because I worked in tech support for 4 years, but keeping myself safe on the Internet was engrained in me pretty quick.
So, here are some Internet safety tips from someone born in the 1900's:
✨ don't give out your passwords, the answers to security questions, credit card info, banking info, or your social security number to anyone.
✨ don't make your username your legal name or phone number.
✨ if you can't change your password or don't remember your old password, log out and select 'forgot password?' to change it.
✨ if a company reaches out to you (like Tumblr staff) about security concerns (your account being hacked, being shadow banned, your password getting changed without your knowledge, ect) and it's not via an email, be cautious and change your password.
✨ two factor authentication (entering your password and getting an email/text with a verification code) is there to make sure no one breaks into your account. If you get an email or text providing you with a code and you didn't log in, change your password.
✨ if you get an email that says your bank account has been charged and you didn't buy anything, check for any typos or if the company logo looks off, and see who sent the email to you and make sure the email is from a legit source. If you're still not sure, call your bank using the phone number on their website (not the phone number in the email that was sent to you, this a common scam tactic to get you to call the scammer and give them your personal info).
Tl;dr, always be cautious. Most issues can be resolved by changing your password.
