Liberale Gesellschaften sind nicht Ziel und Endpunkt der Geschichte. Sie markieren ein Übergangsstadium zwischen einer Vergangenheit, die wir uns zu einer logischen Entwicklung umerzählen, und einer Zukunft, deren Gestalt wir noch nicht kennen, deren Fundamente aber längst gelegt worden sind oder von uns gelegt werden.

Untergangspropheten sind eine ermüdende Begleiterscheinung kultureller Spannungen. Dumme Optimisten allerdings sind noch anstrengender.
