The demonic Doctor Faustus, meanwhile, had led to a minor horror genre, very much scorned by Calvinist pastors, whose own books had trouble asserting themselves against the frivolous and sensationalist competition. The best the guardians of public morals could do was to lean on the booksellers to include an edifying preface by a religious authority that gave the correct interpretation of these tales of sin—a preface that could be conveniently leafed over by the reader.
