I'm confused about the popularity of the sound drivers one tbh. I can’t recall ever having this happen to me. The printer bit though…

I do remember a fair bit of finnicky fickling around one had to do to get sound to work in, well, not The Olden Days but at least Older Days. Like, 15-20 years ago, audio often came through dedicated sound cards, with the same problems dedicated video cards still cause sometimes, because of the proprietary drivers needed to really make them work. The more stuff like that was integrated into the processor/main board the easier driver creation in the open source environment has become. But still, video cards, sound cards and printing are like the holy trinity of I/O fuckups that follow us to this day.

it seems like E is pretty useful/important for getting the skills relevant to jobs. plus even if classes don't teach you anything STEM has better signalling for a lot of stuff

I experience far more direct government coercion than just taxes and traffic laws. There's so many things that are directly illegal for me to do, so I either can't do them or have to beware the government finding out. Primary example, quite a few drugs, for various purposes.
