Phase Cancellation
5th November 2020
When recording anything with multiple microphones it is possible to encounter issues with ‘Phase Cancellation’ - for example if two microphones are not positioned the correct distance apart then the two waveforms which are recorded will cancel each other out at certain frequencies due to this... The way to overcome Phase Cancellation and hopefully not encounter it (although it is still possible that by following this rule it will not work 100% of the time as it should) is to follow what is known as the 3:1 rule, this rule suggests that two microphones recording the same source should never be more than 3 times the distance to the source apart from each other. For example two microphones recording a Piano at 1ft away from the source sound would need to be 3ft apart in order to avoid this issue.
