Lily took off the diamond ring and dropped it into her purse. Another success. She'd become engaged to a Duke's son, but all for show, of course. She'd been engaged to so many men now that she couldn't keep count. It was her new favorite trick: coming up with a new name and pedigree, charming a rich family's son (and a few daughters), getting close enough to the family that she could get to the gold.
She'd cut it close this time, seeing as the wedding was the next day. But she'd played up the nervous bride-to-be for the past few days, and they would assume that the problem was only cold feet. She'd be long gone before they realized what she'd stolen.
Now she could lay low for a while. She made her way through the woods, a dirty cloak from her earliest days on the run hiding her expensive gown. Her horse trailed along behind her, heavy with stolen goods and disguises.
Lily stopped suddenly, having heard something out there in the woods. She drew her dagger. "Who's there?"
