purple phantom fluorite — cubic crystals, Yaogangxian Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan, China
the phantoms inside this fluorite are what make it worth studying. each phantom is a ghost of a smaller crystal that grew, paused, then got encased as growth resumed — you're looking at the mineral's own growth history preserved in three dimensions. the darker purple zones formed when the chemistry of the hydrothermal fluid briefly changed, then resumed.
fluorite (CaF₂) crystallizes in the isometric system, and the cubic habit here is about as textbook-perfect as it gets. Yaogangxian is one of the most prolific mineral localities in China — tungsten, scheelite, fluorite, and cassiterite all come out of this skarn deposit in Hunan Province.
the color in purple fluorite comes from radiation-induced defects in the crystal lattice (color centers), not from trace elements. that's why heating it would actually bleach the color — you'd lose the purple entirely.
