So I've been reading the new Universal Monsters: The Phantom of the Opera.

The 4 part series is primarily based on the 1943 Claude Raines and Susanna Foster film, but is also telling it's own version of the story with definite nods to the Leroux novel.

It's been a very enjoyable read so far and I am very excited to see how it is going to end. For those who don't know, the original 1943 script had a major plot twist in which it was revealed that the Phantom was in fact Christine's father who abandoned her and her mother for a musical career in the Paris Opera. In my opinion there have been a number of hints to this scrapped storyline within the comics and I'm really interested to see if they somehow tie this idea into the new storyline.

The artwork is also gorgeous - particularly the way the Phantom is portrayed as a figure that almost seems to be made of shadows. Often when he is with Christine, the artist draws these black tendrils that come off the Phantom and curl around Christine. There's this particularly gorgeous panel in the third volume where this happen while the two are on opposite sides of the dressing room mirror and it is such a beautifully crafted image.

There's also an absolutely grotesque image of the aftermath of the chandelier crash. It's probably one of the most graphic and bloody depictions I've seen and I kind of love it - it really portrays the horror of the moment.
