Japan's "Phantom Academy" exploring Masquerade further:  521 attended the session on April 2, which was a new record. Akira Aoki (Firmin) and Morito Masuda (André) functioned as the narrators of the evening. Akira Aoki has been with Phantom since the beginning, so obviously he has a lot of stories to tell. They apparently told that while skulls means death in Japan, it means masculinity in Western tradition (?!).  The dancers Yurie Umezaki and Ayaka Yoshida told how much of the choreography was meant to appear a bit mechanic, so the dancers reminds of dolls, and so you can't tell dolls/mannequins from the real cast members. Asako Tomada (Christine) told how the whole scene is a long series of shadows and Phantoms for her character, so she spends the scene in fear. Aiko Toda (Madame Giry) explained her character spend lots of her time on stage trying to warn Raoul of the dangers ahead, especially in Masquerade when he is determined to declare his love openly. She also feels the Phantom's presence.  The Little Band demonstrated their routine, as did the ballerinas. An interesting note was made about how everyone in Masquerade forms small groups, no-one is alone, which makes the Phantom's solo entrance and his solitude all the more obvious. I hadn't thought of it that way before.  They finished the Phantom Academy by performing the whole of Masquerade, not in costumes. Would have loved to see that.  Next Academy session is held on April 11. Phantom of the Opera is performed in Tokyo, at the Dentsu Shiki Theatre, until June 15.  http://www.shiki.jp/navi02/news/program/operaza/
