Phantasm I-V Review
#Phantasm, I was going to originally watch on #Shudder, I came across in #Walmart and realized it has 5 movies in the whole collection! In the #SpiritOfTheSeason, I thought that would be a fun way to spend the day before #Halloween! I had not seen the movie before today, but what I knew of the premise-it could stand the test of time and special effects getting better! It was also intriguing to see a movie go from 1970’s to 2010’s!
Phantasm from 1978-so 70’s! The music, the fashion! I love how it’s a good mix of special effects, playing with creepy topics (like funeral homes), and a variety of scares. I jump easily so I don’t like jump scares but there was one or two that I actually quite enjoyed! Also whatever ninja star ball killer things are in there are like epic. They are called #SilverSentinalSpheres. Love the play of visuals, reality vs fantasy, and leaving the viewer confused but wanting more!
Phantasm II from 1988. It picks up right where the other one left off, and to me that beautifully build up this movie universe, and makes me even more curious about the big bad, The Tall Man. Creatures you previously only saw the silhouette of, you now see the faces of! I love that you get to follow the boy from the first movie.
Phantasm III Lord of the Dead from 1993. It feels very 90’s, and pleasantly like the rest it picked up where the other left off. Such a play on everything! Where you thought someone did not make it last movie, makes it more in this movie than their companion does-and the mystery around the tall man grows deeper!
Phantasm IV Oblivion from 1998. Really love watching this all at once, I can’t imagine waiting years between each sequel. The director went to great care to make each one a treat, but to also link them together. They don’t really introduce a ton of new characters but use the ones they have really well. And we finally get some backstory on the Tall Man!
Phantasm V Ravager from 2016. It doesn’t feel like it was made so recently. I am actually looking forward to a well built up to conclusion. I actually think I spoke too soon. You can totally tell the spheres we’re done digitally. It’s also amazing that they can use the same actors over time in a proper way.
I love the base premise for the collection, that fear is only as real as you make it out to be. I also may or may not be adding Silver Sentinel Spheres to my D&D Character lol. Also, I am that creepy old lady in the dark house. Like she is the grandmother I want to be. So consistent, and yet so much depth. There are a lot of interesting ideas (spiritually speaking) that are being played with. Personally, I also kind of feel bad for Reggy, I am on #TeamReg and would totally claim that hero! I am also quite curious what this has inspired, as watching it-I am kind of getting Saw vibes.
