Fanfic - Oh, Weâre Halfway There
I wrote this in collaboration with @eight-bitanarchistâ! It was a lot of fun and Iâm really happy with what we got here! Oh, We're Halfway There
Lance Thunder's latest career move hasnât been going so well. Thereâs a bunch of late-night talk shows, what exactly does an ex-weatherman bring to the table?
How about a few special ghost guest stars?
âWelcome! Welcome! To Lance Thunderâs Tonight Show! No longer wishing he took that job in Minneapolis!â The man paused, slicked back his hair, and flashed a bleached white smile at the cameras as canned laughter played in the background. Unfortunately, there was no live audience tonight. No way corporate would ever have signed off on that. âOh no, Lance, too many people would be hurt when this inevitably blows upâ, yeah, thanks Jerry, no worries about him getting injured, though, right?
âSo tonight, I have two very special guests! Now Iâm sure many of you are all dying,â he chuckled at the word as he drew it out, âto know who.â
He leaned back in his chair and pointed at the empty one next to him. âSo, in that case, tell us who you love, and welcome Ember McLain!âÂ
On cue, the rockstar appeared in a burst of flame. She leaned over the side of the chair as she flung her hair over her shoulder. The two of them waited for a moment as a prerecorded cheer rang out. She flashed a smile at Lancer, one that was a little more teeth than humor. âHey there, Lance, no hard feelings about the hair, right?â
Lance patted down his hair, âUh, no, no! None at all!â he laughed, nervousness breaking his stage persona for just a moment. He coughed into his hand and then picked up his notes. âIt was an accident. Iâm sure.â
Emberâs smile grew, and she chuckled. âIt wasnât.â
âAnyways,â Lance said, voice cracking as he suddenly became very aware of the fangs in that smile. âMs. McLain-â
âSeriously, call me Ember,â Ember interrupted, âMcLain was what everyone called my mother.â Ember punctuated the statement by making an overly large gagging sound and sticking her tongue towards the camera.Â
Lance laughed, hiding his nervousness behind professional cheer. Besides, the worst she could do to him right now is mind control him on TV. He works in entertainment; mind control would just cut out a few steps in the process for his producers. âEmber it is then,â he said, looking down at his notes before glancing back up. âSo I have got to ask⌠when we approached you for an interview on our show, we honestly didnât expect you to say yes.â
Ember threw her head back and laughed. âReally? Then why did you send that girl over?â
Lancer chuckled. âApparently, it was a dare slash rite of initiation.â
âWelcome to Amity Park!â Ember bellowed, leaning back into her chair, shaking her head. âYou guys should promote her or give her a raise or something. Only person Iâve seen run right into a ghost fight without any kind of backup and all she wanted to do was ask me a question. So I guess youâre wondering why I said yes then?â
Lance nodded. âI personally was hoping it was an apology for lighting my hair on fire.â
âNope, sorry to disappoint,â Ember said, flashing another too pointy smile at the hapless host. She waved it off with a flick of her hand. âBesides, that was like four years ago. You gotta get over it.â
âNo, four years ago was when you kidnapped all the adults and made us exercise for a week.â
âOh⌠Yeah. Sorry, sometimes I get my, ah, excursions mixed up.â
Lance shrugged with a chuckle. âThat one turned out for the best, though. I was in the best shape of my life after that. The missus was very happy.â
âWell, thatâs one way of looking at it.â Ember laughed, before growing a little shy. âActually, well⌠uhâŚâ She fumbled as she fiddled with her hair. âMy boyfriend was telling me I should do something like this. Obviously, Iâve been out of the public limelight for a bitâŚâ
âIf by that you mean you havenât attempted to take over the world the last two years or so, then yes.â
âYeah, thatâŚâ Ember sighed, the action making some of her hair flutter about, âWell, heâd been egging me on, telling me if I wanted to get my name out there in a way that isnât followed by the words âmultiple feloniesâ, something like this might help.â
Lancer threw several of his note pages behind him. âWell! That saves me several lead-in questions!â He leaned over his desk. âSo, the question that Iâve been asked many many times to ask you. Is it true that youâre in a committed relationship?â Ember rolled her eyes, but Lance held up a hand. âAND,â he began, interrupting Emberâs eye roll, âYour last album was, in fact, dedicated to him?â
Ember blushed and put her head in her hands. âOh my god, youâre going for the sappy stuff first?â
âMy nephew was quite distraught about it, so yes. Timmy has been asking for a while.â
Ember gave him a skeptical look. âAnd how old is Timmy?â
Lance shrugged. âHeâs eight.âÂ
âAlright, alright! In that case, yeah, Iâm sorry Timmy, but Iâm definitely takenâ Ember chuckled.
âHeâll be so crushed,â Lance sighed, before leaning forward in a way that definitely reminded Ember of Kitty fishing for gossip. âAnd the album?â
She looked away, trying to hide a blush spreading across her cheeks, but she was smiling brightly. âIâll admit it. Itâs 100% dedicated to my boyfriendâŚâ She paused and tilted her head. âWell⌠70% to him, the other 30% is towards the girls who let him slip through their fingers.â
Lance let out a whistle. âSo heâs a catch?â
âEh, about half of one,â Ember said, laughing. âBut I think heâll get the rest of the way there. Eventually.â
Lance let out a hum. âSo which one was the inspiration for your cover of Living on a Prayer?âÂ
Ember chuckled. âWell, definitely for my boyfriend. Itâs actually part of why we got together!â
âReally?â Lance exclaimed. âThat sounds a bit like a story, is that how you two met?â
âOh, no, we had your normal meet-cute; just the two of us running into each other at the same place. But, no, I was out flying one night. I was pissed cause I had gotten into a fight with my best friend âcause she and her boyfriend were just⌠all over each other. No!â She stopped Lance from saying anything by throwing her hand out and holding up a finger. âI was not jealous.â
âNever said you were.â
âYou were thinking it.â
âI am now.â
âAnyways!â Ember continued. I was out flying, and I heard someone playing Livinâ on a Prayer, and I just stopped.â She let out a sigh and looked off into the distance. âIt⌠brought me back. It was one of the last songs I listened to beforeâŚâ she paused for a moment and licked her lips. She reached down and grabbed the bottle of water that was set out before the show and twisted the cap off. âBefore I died,â she finished.
Lance blinked, obviously not expecting that answer as Ember drank from the water bottle.Â
âIt was an instant favorite of mine,â she brushed some of her hair behind her ears, âWe've got each other, and that's a lot for love. We'll give it a shotâ She recapped the bottle and rolled it around in her hands. âYeah, that rang so true for me. I was going through a lot at the time. My parents⌠wellâŚto say they werenât great would be putting it mildly.â She shrugged. âMy mom had broken my guitar a few times because I played âsatanicâ music. And my father wasnât in the picture... Not to mention, school sucked because I didnât fit in with everyone.â
She placed the bottle down at the table and glanced at Lance, who kept his mouth shut. Letting the guests ramble was his job at the best of times, and there was something about the way she was speaking that made Lance sure interrupting her would be the last thing he did.Â
âBut it was okay. I had a boyfriend who meant the world to me,â she leaned back and looked up at the ceiling. âI remember my philosophy teacher telling us weâre trapped in our own minds, how nothing is real except for what we think. He tried to draw parallels.â Her voice dropped in the approximation of her old teacherâs voice. âHe says he loves you. You think he loves you. You believe he loves you.â She snapped her gaze to Lance and snarled, âRight up to the moment he dumps you.â
Despite himself, Lance jumped back, and Ember ran her hand down her face. âSo the night I died, I had stayed up the entire night listening to that song on repeat, and I cried myself to sleep with the headphones around my ears because I couldnât let my mom know that I was listening to the devilâs music.â She pulled her hand away. âSo I never heard people shouting to get out of the house when the fire started.â
Lance opened and closed his mouth, gaping like a fish. Ember didnât blame him. She had gone heavy real quick from such a light-hearted question. She shook her head, the faraway look in her eyes vanishing as she forced herself back to the present, and smiled almost apologetically. âSo, yeah, Iâm flying through Amity Park, and I hear someone playing that song, and I had to know who it was. And wouldnât you know? I turn around a corner, and I find the guy Iâd been crushing on for a year or so, trying to play the song and sing along at the same time.â
She smirked and leaned forward. âHe was fucking terrible at it too.â
Lance cracked a smile and took the hook, grateful for the tension breaker. âDid you tell him that?â
âImmediately!â Ember laughed, âI flew up and took the guitar from him and shouted, âWeâre starting this from the top!â and he was so shocked that he didnât know how to respond at first, so he just went with it!â She laughed. âHe told me later, it was so not what he thought Iâd do, and he couldnât figure out what he should do in response. So he panicked-â
âShocking,â deadpanned Lance, to a brief burst of prerecorded laughter.
â- and he just listened to what I told him to do. We wound up spending the entire night playing and singing.â
She shrugged. âNeither of us had really thought weâd be dating, but we both definitely think of that as our first date.â
Someone off stage coughed, making both Ember and Lance look up at them. They pointed at their wrist with an expectant look on their face. Lance glanced at the clock and gasped. âOh, Iâm so sorry, Ember, I wanted to ask you a few more questions before we invite our second guest to the stage, but time is running out!â
Ember reached down and grabbed her water bottle. âOh, of course.â
Lance looked at the camera. âAlright, folks, if you thought Ember was one hell of a surprise, wait until you hear about this one!â Lance reached under his desk and put on some football padding over his suit.Â
Ember raised an eyebrow. âIf youâre about to spring an obstacle course on me, dipstick, Iâm setting your hair on fire again.â
Lance patted it down and ensured it was locked in place. âLook, you know who the next guest is! So just in case this turns into a battle zone, I want to be ready.â
If possible, Ember looked less impressed. âAnd youâre not covering your head?â
âHey, I spent a lot of time on my hair, alright? Somebody reminded me how precious it can be!â Lance sniped, before turning toward the camera. âLove him or hate him, everyoneâs got an opinion. Itâs the one and only Danny Phantom!â Lance said, sweeping his hand toward the other seat.Â
When nothing happened.
Ember began to cackle. âOh, god, seriously? Heâs late?â
âSorry! Sorry!â Danny said, appearing out of thin air. âYou guys were about to have a technical issue. I had to take care of it,â he said, patting a thermos on his side.
Ember frowned and groaned. âUgh, was Technus really trying something?â
Danny frowned and grabbed the bottle in front of him, tearing it open and drinking from it like a man dying of thirst. He drained the whole thing and put it back. âYeah, uh⌠he said he was trying to help out Skulker.â
Ember groaned and put her head in her hands.Â
Lance looked between the two. âUh, so for those who donât know, I mean, our viewers, of course. Who?â
Phantom sighed. âTechnus is a ghost whose existence is 100% tied to technology, and Skulker is-â
âMy ex from three years ago.â Ember cut off. âThe man will just. Not. Take. A. HINT!âÂ
Danny waved the thermos around. âNo worries though, Technus is in here, and I beat Skulker like three days ago, so he wonât be around for a while.â
Ember turned toward Danny, âWait, really? He usually terrorizes the weaker ghosts after losing to you, and theyâve been fine as of late.â
Danny paused. âYeah, I evenâŚâ He looked at the thermos in his hands. âOh, whoopsâŚâ
âWhoops?â
âI may⌠or may not⌠have forgotten to release him into the ghost zoneâŚâ
Ember threw her head back and cackled. âHa! So if I were to say, bury that 2000 feet undergroundâŚâ she mused as she reached out for the thermos.
Danny held the thermos away from her. âNo, Em, the core of the earth would melt the thermos and let them out.â
âIs that the only reason?â
â... Oh, right, and itâs immoral or whatever. Thatâs what Iâm supposed to say, right?â
Lance coughed. âI couldnât help but notice. Em?â
The two ghosts turned toward Lance. âOh, yeah,â Ember began, âhe calls me that sometimes. Weâve had something of a working relationship for four years now, after all.â
âOh, is that what weâre calling it?â Danny chipped in.Â
âAmong other things, yes,â Ember laughed. She reached down and grabbed her water bottle and offered it to Danny. He nodded in appreciation and sipped as Lance brought his notes around.Â
âSo, Phantom, or do you prefer Danny?â
Danny shrugged and pulled the water bottle away. âEitherâs fine.â
âJust not Inviso-bill,â Ember said, smirking with her eyes alight with glee, âOr inviso-bill-board.â
âSam never should have told you about that.â He pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment before returning to his drink. âIâm not dredging that one up on live TV.â
âAw, câmon, itâs not that bad!â protested Ember, the widest shit-eating grin on her face.
âIt is exactly that bad, how was I supposed to know intangibility didnât work like that,â Danny shot back, flicking water at Emberâs hair. It hissed as the droplets evaporated. âBesides, I donât want to deprive her of being the only one able to tell that story. I have to think of others first, Em.â
âHow noble,â she snarked.
âDanny,â Lance interrupted the side conversation, though the way he was looking between the two of them, he really didnât want to. âSince weâre on the subject, after all, does your girlfriend know you got a little nickname for Ember here.â
Danny choked on his water as Ember cackled. âWhat?â
âOh god,â Ember laughed, âyour face!âÂ
Danny wiped away his lips. âIâm sorry, what?â
Lance pointed at Ember. âDoes your girlfriend know you call Ember, Em?â
âHow did you know I had a girlfriend?â
âTo be honest, you just told me.â Danny made a sound somewhat between a whine and the sound the computer makes when it tries to load audio and freezes in the middle of playing the first note. Lance laughed, though not as hard as Ember. âBut there have been rumors, also, the other day when you fought Skulker, you shouted at him for interrupting date night. Congratulations to both of you, now my nephew AND my niece are going to be heartbroken.â
Danny dropped his head in his hands. âIâm terrible at this secret girlfriend thingâŚ.âÂ
âYup!â Ember popped. She leaned toward him. âSooooo⌠What does your girlfriend think about you calling me Em?â
Danny glared at her. âI think she doesnât mind at all.â
Lance raised his eyebrows suggestively. âYou think she doesnât mind?â
âI know she doesnât mind,â Danny said as he turned his glare to Lance.
âOh, come off it, Phantom,â Ember said, pushing him lightly. âYou canât blame him for wondering.âÂ
âWell, now Iâm also wondering about this secret girlfriend thing,â Lance began, âHow long have you two been dating.â
âTwo years,â Phantom said immediately.Â
âTwo years! Hey, you managed to keep it a secret this long! Thatâs not too bad.â Lance frowned and put his chin in his hand. âThough, I have to ask why keep it secret?â
Danny shrugged. âThatâs actually kind of why I agreed to come on this week. See, there are people out there whoâd want to hurt her. Specifically, the U.S Government has a branch dedicated to hunting me down and trying to destroy me.â
âNot just you,â Ember pointed out, âItâs for all ghosts.âÂ
âReally?â Lance began, though he didnât quite manage the surprise needed to make the question feel believable.Â
Danny nodded. âThe Guys in White, they were attached to the budget in 1978, you can look it up. Theyâre also referred to as the Ghostly Investigation Ward sometimes. They have a very shoot first, and donât bother with questions approach to ghosts, and they keep themselves very hush, hush. Oh, wait, I just told a journalist about them on live TV!â He slapped his palm to his forehead. âWhoops again!â
Lance nodded in response, writing a note down. âIâll be sure to look them up. So theyâd attack your girlfriend to get to you?â
âThey have shot at civilians who looked ghostly. It wasnât something I was willing to chance.â
Ember huffed. âSome advice, Baby Pop, thatâs something you should let her decide.â
Phantom gave her a look. âI did talk it over with her. She had her own worries too.âÂ
âYou could have led with that.âÂ
Danny extended a hand towards Lance, âHe asked why I was keeping it a secret!â
Lance held up a finger. âActually, I asked why it was kept a secret, not why you were keeping it a secret.â
âLance⌠Please⌠I need you on my side hereâŚâ Danny looked at Lance with the expression of a kicked puppy.
Lance reached down and pulled out a riot shield. âDanny, if youâve watched my show before, you would know Iâm not on anyoneâs side. Iâm an instigator. Also, she scares me.â He ducked behind the shield. âSo⌠does your girlfriend know Ember calls you Baby Pop?â
âForget that!â Ember said, turning around. âIs your girlfriend hot?â
âYes.â There was no thought behind that statement, just an immediate declaration of fact.Â
Ember pressed forward, leaning more toward Danny. âOut of ten?â
âEleven.âÂ
Ember laughed and then smirked. âWellâŚ. Howâs she doing.â
âHow's she doing?â Danny repeated, raising an eyebrow. He glanced between Ember and Lance, frowning.Â
Ember glanced at Lance and then back at Phantom, giving him a nod. âYeah, how is she doing?â
Danny blushed and rubbed the back of his head. âI dunno. How is she doing?â
Ember laughed and ran a hand through her hair. âIâm doing great right now, thanks for asking.â
Lance peeked over the riot shield. âWait⌠you two?â
âYou never did ask who we were dating.â Ember pointed out, laughing.Â
âYou said you had a standard meet-cute!â
âWe did!â
Danny sighed and put his head in his hand. âEmber, please stop telling people that you trying to crush my head in with your guitar is our âmeet -cute.ââ
âBut it was!â
Lance blinked as he put the riot shield away. âWait, she tried to kill you? Doesnât that get in the way of the relationship at all?â
Ember laughed as she stood up. She walked around to Dannyâs chair and leaned on him. âAre you kidding? If you donât try to kill this guy, he loses interest in you pretty quickly.â
Danny groaned. âThatâs really not true.â
Ember started counting down on her fingers. âLetâs see, that one chick accidentally turned into a dragon and wanted to eat you, Red was actively trying to kill you while you two were dating,â
Danny held up a hand. âWait! What about Kitty? I donât think she ever tried to kill me?â
Ember waved it off. âKitty doesnât count. She was trying to piss off Johnny. Anyways, thereâs me, and Sam did kill you.â
Danny folded his arms and huffed. âYou know she hates it when you put it like that.â
âShe convinced you twice to get zapped and go ghost. It definitely counts. She half-killed you twice, so sheâs the only one to actually have been successful.â
Danny groaned and shoved his head in his hands.
âThat doesnât sound like an argument,â Ember sang-song.
Lance held up a finger. âUmmm⌠excuse me? Half killed?â
Ember reached down and threaded her fingers through Dannyâs hair. He looked up at Lancer. âWell, itâs another reason why I wanted to go on your show and how Ember convinced me to join herâŚâ he shrugged. âIâm not just a ghost. Iâm human as well.â
Lance blinked. âI donât quite follow. Can you show us?â
Danny shook his head. âSorry, not comfortable doing that on live TV.â Danny pointed at the cameras. âLike I said, thereâs an entire section of the government looking to kill me. Iâll happily out them, but myself? Nah.âÂ
Ember reached over and squeezed his hand. âBaby Pop⌠you know you have to give them somethingâŚâ Danny paused and slowly nodded. âYeah, I guess youâre rightâŚâ he chewed on his lip. âAlright, last time I tried this, it went pretty horrible, butâŚâ Ember groaned. âOh, God⌠please tell me youâre not-â
Lance jumped as a bright light appeared, a glowing circle about as large as Danny emanated from his left shoulder, off-center from his body.Â
The slap of Emberâs hand hitting her own forehead almost covered up the scream from Lance. âYou are⌠Dipstick, I swear if you get stuck againâŚâ
Danny held up his hands. The glowing circle went down one arm, leaving behind a very human-looking limb. One hand was gloved and in a jumpsuit, the other arm was completely bare, save a white t-shirt sleeve hanging out of the hazmat suit. âItâs okay, Iâve practiced more since then!â
âYou practiced?â
Danny ignored Emberâs screech ( that was definitely not born of worry if asked her) and walked over to Lance. Danny held out his human limb. âHere, check my pulse. All ectologists agree ghosts canât replicate a heartbeat.â
âWe donât have that kind of control,â Ember grumbled. âThe heart isnât just an organ, at least when it comes to your soul and body.â
Lance took Dannyâs hand in his own. âWow⌠youâre really warm.âÂ
Danny shrugged, knowing that he wasnât. Lance was just expecting something ice-cold like every other ghost. Ember, however, perked up. âRight? Heâs even warmer when he gets his hands around my waist and-â
âEmber!â Danny shouted, proving to the world that while ghosts couldnât have heartbeats, they could definitely blush. âThe world doesnât need to know about that!â
Ember smirked and languidly stretched out across her chair. âI completely disagree.â
âYou have a heartbeatâŚâ Lance interrupted, shocked. The two ghosts looked back at Lance, but he didnât look up from Dannyâs wrist. âThatâs⌠I can feel thatâŚâÂ
The ring appeared again, and went back down Dannyâs arm, putting back the jumpsuit. Lance pulled his hand away when he could no longer feel the heartbeat. âHow?â
Danny shrugged. âSorry, like I said, Iâm not quite comfortable telling the world how I came to be-â
Ember cut across him loudly, âWhen two humans love each other very much-â Â
âNOT what I was getting at, and you know it.â Danny interrupted the interrupter. Ember stuck out her tongue at him. âDonât make me gag you, rockstar.â
âI thought you didnât want people knowing what we get up to in private.â
Danny groaned through his fingers as he held his face in exasperation.
âOn behalf of our broadcast standards Iâm going to have to ask you to stop as well,â Lance said almost absently, his eyes still fixed on Dannyâs hand.
Danny lifted his head in confusion. âWe can talk about government secrets, plans to violently murder me, and swear like sailors, but talking about, ah⌠bedroom matters is a step too far?â
âWelcome to American TV, baby pop,â Ember deadpanned, leaning back in her chair. âThis is why I prefer the European circuit, theyâre a lot more free about this kind of stuff.â
âYouâve never been on European TV!â
âSome day I might be.â
âIf we could get back to the half alive thing?â Lance asked, his expression of bafflement never quite fading even as he attempted to return to his host persona.
âSorry, but thatâs all Iâm willing to give. I donât want the Guys in White having any info about how to kill me that they donât need.â He gave an apologetic shrug, âAs for the actual science behind it, well⌠thatâd be a LONG conversation that we probably donât have time for.â
Lance looked up at the clock again and groaned. âUgh, speaking of, thatâs all we got time for tonight! I hope to get you guys on again sometime!â
âOh, weâd love to. Assuming weâre not strapped to a dissection table in one of your governmentâs labs.â Ember smirked, though this time it was a little less cocky and a little more pained.Â
âIn my case, itâd be a vivisection table.âÂ
âBut seriously, we better start running.â Ember brushed her hair back and revealed a headset. âSounds like the Guys in White are closing in, so we gotta jet.â Ember jumped up and intertwined her hand with Dannyâs. âLater, Lance.â
âLater!â He said, as the two of them turned invisible. He turned toward the camera. âWell, then, as fun as it was, and wow were those a couple of bombshells they dropped on us. Thatâs it for tonight, this Lance Thunder signing-âÂ
The rest was cut off as the walls behind him exploded; he ducked his head and brought the riot shield around. âHoly-â was all he got out as armed men tackled him to the ground. âNo! Not the hair!â
Outside, Ember chuckled as she watched the Guys in White pour into the building, not realizing the two of them were long gone and about to be even further gone. She looked at her boyfriend, who was chewing on his lip. She sighed and hugged him from behind, putting her forehead into the middle of his back.Â
Flames overtook them, and in a moment they were long gone from anywhere the Guys in White would find them, Danny feeling the ectoplasm of Emberâs lair washing over him, warm and familiar as they settled in. âI still feel badâŚâ Danny muttered.Â
âLance knew what he was signing up for. Or his producers did, anyway. Your parents made sure of that.â
âI know, I know⌠butâŚâ he sighed and rubbed his face. âHow on earth did I let you talk me into this, Em?â
Ember shrugged. âHonestly? Cause Iâm pretty, but you know Iâm right.â She floated up and kissed him on the cheek.Â
âI just dropped that I was a human on live TV.â
âYup!â Danny was beginning to find the whole popping thing at once endearing and infuriating, especially in his current state. âLook, you already told your parents, so the hard parts are over, right? And now youâve dropped that particular bombshell, the lawsuit Samâs set of lawyers are filing over human rights violations for you just got a lot more weight, Tucker is spreading the news all over the internet about the time the GIW tried to bomb the afterlife and their other greatest hits, and thatâs on top of your parents suing the the same idiots for patent violations.â
She floated around and took both his hands in hers. âIf we wanna stop them from pushing all those anti-ghost laws through, we needed to do this. You were never gonna get a perfect moment to just tell people. Itâs not like some stupid asteroid is gonna come crashing down, and you have to reveal yourself. You have to make the right moment, and this is step one of doing that -Â getting the idea out there. And besides, until we can get all that done, fame makes one hell of a shield.â
Danny sighed and pressed the back of her hands into his forehead. âI know, I know.â
âItâs okay. Iâm here with you. Iâm going to be every step of the way. And hey, weâre halfway there already.âÂ
Danny smirked and kissed the back of her hands. âYeah, I know. Thank God, just donât corrupt Dani too much.â
Ember smirked. âOh, I make zero promises. Dipsqueak has a lot of potential...â
âI just feel like Iâve been forgetting somethingâŚâ Danny frowned and looked down. Ember rolled her eyes and resolved to comfort him a little bit longer when his phone went off. The two of them froze, afraid it was one of their friends informing them that something had gone wrong. Danny grabbed his phone and pulled it out of his pocket. âHello?â
âYOU WERE PHANTOM THE WHOLE TIME?â
Danny had to pull his head away from the phone as the voice on the other side screamed. âOh, right,â he said to Ember and tentatively put his phone back to his ear when they didnât yell at him anymore. âHello, Valerie.â
