Sophia Lillis, Sadie Sink, and Amybeth McNulty play sisters who move into this small town in the middle of America. During their first week, they discover this strange gate in the basement which leads to nowhere. One day, one of the sisters accidentally “activates” the gate and after crossing through it, she finds herself in a high-tech, metropolis. Robots roam the streets, there are holograms everywhere, and everything just feels futuristic.

Also, strangely enough, it’s a city where all the people seem to be “happy”. Everyone has everything they can ever want, access to any vice they can think of.

The sisters make it a habit to visit the future world for fun. They even bring along the friends they made at school (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Olivia Rodrigo, and Noah Schnapp as the token boy). Everything seems all fine and dandy...until we get the plot twist.

We learn that the gate that the sisters found in the basement is actually a portal to the far future. It’s also a future where aliens rule the Earth and have enslaved all of humanity. The “city” is actually a prison camp designed to keep humanity docile through vices and other distractions. The robots roaming the streets are actually prison guards.

The second half of the movie becomes a tense race to the portal in order to escape the alien overlords, who realized that the teenagers have discovered the secret behind the city.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson play the two main antagonists, the leaders of the alien overlords. They start off as friendly, goofy characters who befriend the teenagers but reveal their true nature once the teenagers realize what’s happening.
