A beautiful glassy quartz crystal from Mandello Lario, Lecco. A real pity that this locality has provided few specimens, which were found during the construction work of a petrol station. The crystal shows oils of different colors (remember that different colors indicate a different degree of "maturation" of the oil itself.) The detail highlights a window, parallel to a terminal rhombohedron face, which contains at least four different phases. The yellow petroleum is the predominant one, the central colorless area seems to be due to a liquid inclusion which contains both black particles of the bituminous type and small gaseous bubbles. Also evident are small irregular cylindrical cavities with brown-colored oil included. These crystals show a response to UV light of very high intensity but related only to yellow petroleum. the crystal size is about 35mm. Eugenio Donati Collection.
