Peter Tabuns is the Ontario NDP’s candidate (and current MPP) for the riding of Toronto-Danforth. He was voted Best MPP by readers of NOW Magazine twice. For the 2018 election, he is one of only seven Ontario candidates endorsed by the non-partisan environmental group GreenPAC. He is the NDP critic for energy and for environment and climate change issues. He has been endorsed by two teacher’s unions: Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (Toronto) and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (Toronto Secondary).

A New Democrat MPP says parents who have lost a child need more than 10 days to grieve before having to return to work.

Under the Employment Standards Act, parents are entitled to up to 37 weeks of unpaid leave from work to care for a critically ill child.

But if that child dies, that leave ends at the end of the week, with an additional 10-day personal emergency leave being the remaining protection under the act.

However, if an employee's child dies as the result of a crime, they are entitled to an unpaid leave of absence of up to 104 weeks.

Peter Tabuns is introducing Jonathan's Law today, a private member's bill that would allow parents who have lost a child to have up to 52 weeks of leave from work.
