Far Cry (2008)

Let’s say for some incomprehensible reason you didn’t think “Alone in the Dark” wasn’t a total piece of shit and you decided to check out the sequel. How is it? Does it satisfy? Well I’m here to inform you that not only is the sequel, “Alone in the Dark II” worse, it has absolutely nothing to do with the first film. The plot is a near-completely incomprehensible mess, but here’s what I was able to put together: centuries ago, there was this witch who was killed. Before she was killed though, her dark powers managed to possess this dagger. Anyone who touches it becomes infected and will eventually die, unless they track down a piece of the witches’ heart and puts it in the hilt of the dagger. When Edward Carnby (Rick Yune) gets infected himself, he seeks the help of the descendants of the man who imprisoned the witch in the first place. It’s going to be more difficult than said though because although Natalie (Rachel Spected) and her father Dexter (Bill Moseley) are willing to help, Dexter is reluctant to team up with the one man that will really be able to find the witch, Abner Lundberg (Lance Henriksen).

None of the characters from the first film return (as far as I can tell, maybe they name-dropped at the beginning when a whole bunch of random mercenaries get killed by the witches’ ghost). Furthermore, I doubt even if you found the original film compelling, or frightening you would love this one because the type of horror it’s attempting to do is a completely different. Basically, if you somehow managed to trick yourself into thinking you like that first movie there is absolutely nothing here for you. As a film by itself, the plot is vaguely established and confusing. For long sequences of the film you will be wondering who the main character is because Edward Carnby (who I assume is the main character) doesn’t come on-screen until at least 15 minutes into the film. There are multiple plot threads that come in and out of nowhere, the makeup and special effects aren’t particularly impressive and the film is never the least bit frightening. You have Danny Trejo playing a small role, just so you can have his name in the opening credits because his character appears in two scenes and brings absolutely nothing in the movie. The acting is bad too. There’s nothing else to say really because it is incredibly dull to watch and overall simply a waste of your time.
