I had always thought that many illustrators from the past got nothing like the attention they deserved so I decided to make some videos about a few of these almost forgotten talents. The unsung heroes series was originally intended to be about illustrators from what's known as the golden age of illustration. But I soon realised that meant ignoring many early 20th century illustrators who strictly speaking didn't fit that description. So I compromised and ended up with parameters of those born between 1850 and 1910. There are also videos about individual illustrators who are personal favourites of mine, mostly but not exclusively from the early 20th century. And there are a range of others on various aspects of illustration, such as children's books, advertising, art deco or a certain historical period. If it's illustration then it has my interest. And I very much hope it has yours, too.
I just discovered that this youtube channel exists and have been gradually making my through the existing content. The videos cover the topic of illustration and touch on many of the artists and magazines Iāve shared on this tumblr. For instance, some of the magazines discussed are Jugend, Die Muskete,Ā Der wahre Jacob, &Ā Der Orchideengarten. As for individual artists, you get some of my personal favorites like Virgil Finlay, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac,Ā Carlos Schwabe,Ā Boris Artzybasheff, Maxfield Parrish, &Ā Alphonse Mucha. Beard also covers topics likeĀ āThe Origins of Fantasy Artā and he has a multi-part (and growing) series on the āUnsung Heroes of Illustrationā.Ā I think that if I had created a youtube channel on illustration it would probably look something like this (without the proper diction, pronunciation, or pleasing tenor). Hungary is a country that can boast quite a few illustrators of significant interest, and yet the world at large seems pretty much ignorant of any of them. Janos Kass is a case in point. His work is inventive, frequently unexpected and never less than visually absorbing.

This video has proven to be particularly hard to make, and I came close to abandoning it several times. No doubt I'Il get comments suggesting it might have been better if I had. And yes I know I left out your personal favourite, and I did it just to annoy you. I've also had to play fast and loose with the strict chronology to an extent, in order to accommodate some specific illustrators and bands. But it's an honest if flawed attempt to document the birth, life and near demise of yet another popular art form society at large no longer has any use for.
