Ava glanced down at the jiggly thing at the end of the fork. She was pretty sure the bright neon green of it wasn’t supposed to be healthy either. “I know you’re not trying to poison me... but that doesn’t look at all appetizing. Isn’t key lime pie supposed to look like pie?”

Ava returned a smarmy look and held out her cupped hands, as if said chance could be plopped into her palms. “Are you sure? No take-backsies.” She smiled despite the redness around her eyes and her slightly stuffy nose.

“I’ll say. This is peppermint extract, not vanilla. These cookies are going to taste awful.” Ava’s brow furrowed as she continued to beat at the mixture. So much for trying something new...

“I was trying to remember whether or not I left the stove on,” she said, adding just enough sarcasm that it could be taken as a joke if necessary. 

“Most people don’t,” she says simply, taking another step forward. “It’s a talent of mine. I’m guessing you have it too.”

She flips off the boys with two fingers. “Sorry boys--guess you’re gonna have to jump someone else,” she hums. She only stops to wonder why the other woman is in such a shitty place after they’re out of the boys’ range. “Uh--thanks. I thought I was the only woman who fucked around in places like that.”

Devon shrugs, a laugh sneaking out right between her teeth. She shakes her head. “Hey, if I let every fucking asshole who asked me ignorant questions bother me, no way I’d have gotten this far,” she replies. No, she prefers to focus on the admirers, the people in the industry who believe in her. “As cheesy as it sounds, I perform for the fans.” Sure, post-transition, a new group of fans follow her but that doesn’t bother her much.
