"THIEVES STEAL WOOD AS WOMAN SCREAMS," Toronto Star. October 16, 1933. Page 3. ---- Sees Fuel Supply Loaded on Truck But "Afraid to Interfere" ---- Special to The Star Listowel, Oct. 16. - Laughing and talking while they piled firewood on their truck and in spite of the screams and shouts of Mrs. W. Whipfler, whose firewood they were taking from her shed, thieves finished their job and drove off Saturday night.
"I was afraid to go down for fear of violence. They got into the woodshed, putting an arm through a defective spot in the cement doorstep and thus removing the bars against the inside of the door. You would think that they knew the place," said Mrs. Whipfler.
The wood had been placed in her shed Friday. The thieves have not been located.
Mrs. Whipfler has to work for her living. She lives at the corner of Bismark and McDowell Sts., and her shouts while the robbers loaded their truck went unnoticed.
"Sent to Penitentiary," The Globe and Mail. October 13, 1943. Page 7. ---- Stratford, Oct. 12 (CP). -Joseph Demonds, alias Paul Gregory, who escaped from Perth County Jail Sept. 30, the day before he was to appear in court on two charges of theft, today was sentenced to four years in penitentiary on each charge. The sentences are concurrent. Desmonds was apprehended at Fergus Saturday. He elected trial by higher court on the charge of escaping jail by violence.
"AWAITING SENTENCE TWO THIEVES ESCAPE," Toronto Star. September 30, 1943. Page 10. --- Stratford, Ont.. Sept. 30 - (CP)- Joe Demonds of Guelph, also known as Paul Gregory, and Albert Hodges of Regina escaped from Perth county jail here here today.
Demonds, who pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from a Mitchell hotel, was to appear in court here tomorrow for sentence. Hodges was facing charges of burglary and theft. He was to have been tried at the next sitting of the supreme court.
